I think he can open the back door and also differentiate between the TOMATO tin being opened and the TUNA tin. Does this make him as smart as a dog?

Some animals are smart, some aren't. Sounds as if you have a smart one.

One of my cats jumps up to turn off the light switch on the wall when I've been at the computer and ignoring him. That's a smart cat! 1) He knows that the switch controls the light. 2) He knows that I don't want to sit in then the dark and will get up!

Cats are cats. Comparing them to dogs is like comparing apples and oranges. On some level I think cats are smarter than humans. They have a certain depth that speaks of a connection to the universe that we can only try to imagine. As a practical example, some cats can be trained to use the toilet. Don't know of any dogs that can do that. The thing about cats is that they think humans are beneath them, only a little better than a warm rock and, of course, a meal ticket. A dog worships the very ground you walk on. Usually, "smart" in human characteristics tends to side with the aloof and independent, not the "yes sir" crowd.

Comparing two species is like comparing apples and oranges.

Dogs are pack animals, they think in groups--same as horses and cows.

Cats are loners, they think VERY differently. They usually fail in maze tests because the goal for the scientist is to see how fast an animal can get to the center, and also how well they remember doing it. With cats, getting to the center is moot. As a species cats find prey in nooks and crannies, so cats naturally explore ALL parts of the maze and don't necessarily want to get to the center because that's not their goal.

They think like cats. One person who was live trapping cats for TNR had a reporter with a camera with him to catch a shot for the news of a cat being caught in a live trap. Well, they got on tape a cat going in, carefully stepping over the trigger plate, taking the can of catfood in it's teeth, backing out and running off with the can. Yes they think, they reason, they put 2 and 2 together, but they don't do it like dogs so you can't really compare them.

"Smart as a dog" is being very general. Dogs and cats, like humans, have varying levels of intelligence. Also, I've never seen anywhere that cats are on average not smarter than dogs, which it seems to me you are implying. However, I HAVE heard that an average cat's IQ is about the same as a human toddler's, if that helps anything.

Cats are extremely smart. It's not that cats don't know how to learn tricks, it's that they won't. Cats do some amazing things. Cats can fit their whole bodies in something as small as a cereal bowl. Cats can open cubbard doors if forced. Cats can distinguish between opening my dog food and opening their cat food. Cats know when it's feeding time when they hear a certain cubbard door open. Cats know how to keep themselves clean. Cats know how to get into impossibly high places. Cats know how to always land on their feet. Cats know how to manipulate their humans. Cats know when to pretend to be sleeping. Cats know how to poop in a house without using the carpet. Cats know when they are bad, but they do it anyways. Cats also know what they want. That's why cats don't learn "sit", "stay", "speak", because they don't want to, nor have to since all they have to do is look cute and cuddle. Cats also know when you are sad, stressed, and upset and when to sooth you.

Once I found him on to of the garage and I held out my arms and said "Come to Mama" and he jumped right into my arms without hurting me.They are much smarter than dogs.
