Cats - December 2006

Ive recently purchased 2 cats from the rescue, a male and a female they are both 5 month old from the same litter

This is the first time ive ever owned a cat or cats should i say and i wanted to know the best way to bond with them?
They seem a little nervous around me if i get too close and seem to want to get away from me, and im probably seeming a little nervous too trying not to scare them off

The female has shown a little trust in me shes come upto me a few times to rub against my hand like cats do but if i go to her she seems to run off, or if i move in a certain way she'll quickly move away ( i think she thinks im trying to pick her up) she doesnt like being picked up

The male ive had fun with playin with his toy and tried to gently get closer to him using the toys which has helped a little but he does try and claw me if i put my hand near him, is this normal? or is this a sign to tell me to go away?

Any advice welcomed

In the past couple of days i've noticed a change in my cat. She isn't playful, she sleeps alot, she won't let us touch her. If we do touch her she growls and hisses. We thought she might be prgnant because she has nipples that are bigger than normal.

I have an adorable 1 1/2 yr old male tabby who I adore completely and loves me very much . Every time we play he always has to bite , not viciously , but his mouth always is the main focus, I do not mind because he is a very affectionate cat . He loves to have my fingers in his mouth to play with . Why ?

Socks is our 1 year old cat. We have had him from when he was a very small kitten (I live in a house shared with 4 other students).

Socks is very happy when there is just one person with him and everything is quiet - he will often purr and rub against people and act like a normal cat.

However it's quite busy and noisy in our house and Socks doesn't like it - he jumps at small noises, runs off and rarely shows affection to anyone in a group of people. If he is picked up by anyone apart from me he struggles to get down straight away. He never bites or scratches but he just seems to be so unhappy with so many people around.

Is there any way we can make him less nervous and more comfortable with people? He's a very sweet cat when he's not feeling crowded.

We suddenly lost our precious Samson about 2 weeks ago. He was 15-1/2 years old. Delilah is 15 years old. I thought that getting another cat (whose name just happens to be Sam) would help our depression. Sam is 5 years old. They seem to tolerate each other. It's been 2 days since Delilah has eaten. I tried giving her baby food, turkey breast and other things but she doesn't want to eat. I have an appointment with the vet this evening. I'm wondering if we adopted too soon and what I can do to make her feel better.

Does anyone know if they are going to make it illegal for cats to be declawed? I heard it is in England. I personally think it is wrong, I just feel like cats are part of the family , and it is just like a persons nails getting ripped out.

So shall I ask the owner to help pay for suport for the kittens or at least take half of them. My cat is tortoise shell and from the colour mix of the kittens is has to be the ginger tom from next door. Also all the other nearby tomcats have had an unpleasent visit to the vet!

Would any of the Animal Rights organisations, or any other organisation, have a problem if the moggy was put down in a humane way in order to make a fur hat out of its skin? Is it legal to do this? I had thought that I would be doing the community a favour by removing another 4 legged terrorist from the city streets, and in the process make a quite warm and attractive hat. Does anybody have any ideas on this?

We just got an 9-week old kitten and have had him for a few days.
I've never had a kitten before, so I'm not sure if his behavior is normal or not. He's extremely playful for about 95% of the time we're around him, and doesn't really sit down much or take much of a break from playing.
I know kittens are frisky and curious by nature, but he doesn't let us sleep at all and is constantly running around. I'm happy that he's so playful, but I'm wondering at what age cats start to calm down a bit so i can get a little rest. we even tried closing our bedroom door so that he can't wake us up at night, but he sits outside the door all night scratching on it and meowing.
any advice you could give would be appreciated. thanks!

I have an adorable 11 wk old kitten. He is playing well, eating well and using his litter tray without problems. However he has sticky eyes and at times a sticky nose.....any ideas? He's due at the vets next week but I'm a bit concerned.

In my country, cats are considered a deliquesce. Cats are considerd some of the best meat you can eat. Americans don't know what good food is. Young cats have the most tender meat. Dont I have a right to eat cats while staying in the states. It is part of my culture....people here are so intolerant and quick to judge others, yet you slaughter cows and chickens everyday. It makes no sense.

Also he seems to have lost his voice. He opens his mouth to meow but no sound comes out. He is eating, drinking and using his litter box as normal. I recently had a cold myself. Could he have caught it from me?
