its a natural thing for cats, especially if they're indoor. its like hunting, except you're the mommy who's playing "hunt" with him, and your hand is the pray. I did that with my cat, my right hand was always scratched. But after a while, she calmed down. And now, she still does bite when she gets into a rush, but its not as often, its not hard, and she knows that when i tell her "no", or my hand gets stiff, that she has to let go. Think of it as training.

I wouldn't let him bite, even if it is playful. Things could get out of hand (no pun intended) if a guest or someone is playing with tabby and he bites. To stop this habit, put some bitter apple flavoring on your hand. Or lemon juice. Cats don't like these flavors, and it is a subtle way to change its behavior. The reason why he bites is either overstimulation, or hunting instincts.

Cats bite during play. If you've ever seen a kitten with it's momma, they play quite rough. This play continues throughout their lives, it's practice for hunting and fighting.
Cats who are declawed are especially prone to making their teeth their weapon of choice, in the absence of their claws.
If the biting is undesireable behaviour, just let him know by ending the game. You can also redirect this behaviour to another object, like a cat toy. That way you can still be interactive, without being bitten.

male cats do this--when they are babies, they use the mouth for suckling. as they grow, they think of you less as a mom than a mate. they use their jaws in mating rituals to hold on to the mate while they mount her. try to keep your relationship that of momms rather than mate.

Those are love bites, just make sure if he gets too rough to hit him on the nose so he knows he bit too hard.

He lets you put your fingers in his mouth? That's great, he should be easy to give medications to.
