Cats - August 2006

I noticed my kitten had brown crusty stuff in her chin hair. I can't tell what it is, but it almost looks like dried food. I tried to wipe it off, but it's attached to her fur. My older cat had something similar one time. Is this a scab, or crusted food? She's a very sloppy eater. She's not a teeny baby either. Anyone ever notice such a thing on their cat? I am hoping it's just food, because that can't be an easy place to clean.

How does breeding works? Do cats just.. breed with the first can in heat they see?

Also, what is the gestation time of a cat?

I lost him three days ago, hes a indoor cat and delcawed, but pretty big. Would their be any chance of him surviving? Also where should I look for him? I put up lost signs of him on mailboxes and stuff , and only got 1 call, but they saw him the night after he got lost I looked where the person said they saw him, and no sign, do you think he would still be around that area?

they don't come home one night? What if some evil person picked it up and started to do awful things to it??? (That's actually how a lot of serial killers get their start.)

My co-worker's cat just got sprayed by a skunk the other day....while not funny at the time, it is now. You wouldn't believe what they had to go through to clean the poor baby up, plus their house!! And they didn't let their cat wander off on its own, their cat actually had a harness, collar and leash and they would leave her tied to the front porch (a long leash) so she could "enjoy" the outdoors. Well, I don't think they'll be doing that again anytime soon!!!

Some people feel it is being nice to the cat to let it have its "freedom". But the fact is, indoor cats are cleaner, live longer and not neighborhood nuisances.

Anyway, I would like to hear from anyone who thinks its okay to let their cat outside, their rationale, and if they worry about him/her getting into any trouble.

We have 3 indoor babies, and none of them are "naked". All have collars, all have tags, and one (the youngest) has a bell because he likes to sneak up on the other two cats and pounce on them. This way, I figured I would at least give the other two a warning and fighting chance if the third came by to "visit". LOL.

By the way, before anyone mentions this, they are all wear those safety breakaway collars, so they can get out of it if they get stuck on something in my house (say the window blinds or something).

OUR CAT HAD KITTENS ABOUT 5 WEEKS AGO. EVERY TIME THEY GET NEAR AN ASHTRAY THAT HAS ANYTHING IN IT...THEY LICK THE ASHES! I DONT KNOW IF THEYRE LACKING IN SOMETHING OR IF THEY JUST LIKE THE TASTE OF ASHES. I MOVE THE TRAY AND THEY GET CRAZY TRYING TO FIND IT AGAIN. THEY JUST LOVE IT BUT IM SURE IT CANT BE GOOD FOR THEM TO EAT ASHES...ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS ONE?

my cats are 4 years old, brother and sister, and the female one follows me EVERYWHERE and always has. when i'm in the toilet and the bath she shoves the door to get in. even when i got locked out and slept in the car she came in the sunroof and miawed at me despite really hating the car. when she was a kitten she was the runt and very weak and i used to carry her round with me for warmth and hand feed her to keep her alive - so am i to blame for her clingyness? she's ok if i go to work, she'll just sleep or go in the garden, so i can leave her when necessary.

the boy cat just bimbles round outside and comes in to eat and cuddle so its obviously not genetic

Do your cat's follow you? Every room I go into all 3 follow me. The dogs don't do that, just the cats. Do your's do this?

is it also true that if i tell him off for doing so he will bring bigger animals because he thinks he's failed?

and the birds and mice that one brings in the other rips to pieces once they're dead - does this mean she doesnt like me and thinks i don't deserve a gift?

ok so i have to babysit my brothers cat for a few days and its a female but i already have a female cat who is the most lovable cat in the whole world she even gets along with the dog. anyway when the little cat (my brothers) came we kept them seperate. but now both cats are being very mean and hiss at everything, even thought they havent seen each other, and yes i know they can probably smell each other, but why dont female cats get along?

the vets office gave me some pain meds for them, and told me how to give it to them. they said make sure each takes their own medicine and not the other's. however, i'm pretty sure they said this was because the female was getting a little more med than the male, which makes sense because a spay is more invasive and has a longer recovery time than a neuter... but when i went to give them their meds this morning, they were labeled so the male gets more than the female...
i have tried calling the vet's office, but no one is answering the phone. any vet techs around that could help me out, so my kittens can get their meds? thanks!

My year-old cat is constantly bringing home dead or nearly-dead creatures and leaving them on my front step -- mice, baby moles, birds, and just recently a chipmunk. Why is she doing this? Is it some sort of gesture?

I bought a scratching post but he"d rather use my couch any way to get him to stop , I also squirt him when i catch him, that only works for the moment.
