I noticed my kitten had brown crusty stuff in her chin hair. I can't tell what it is, but it almost looks like dried food. I tried to wipe it off, but it's attached to her fur. My older cat had something similar one time. Is this a scab, or crusted food? She's a very sloppy eater. She's not a teeny baby either. Anyone ever notice such a thing on their cat? I am hoping it's just food, because that can't be an easy place to clean.

Both cats eat dry food.

Yup, it's feline acne.

It's not harmful by itself, but the little scabbies can get infected, and that can be harmful.

Buy your kitty some stainless steel food and water bowls. You can find them in pet stores. Plastic and ceramic bowls tend to hold tiny bits of food residue that get on kitty's chin and cause acne. Stainless bowls don't guarantee that kitty won't get acne, but they make it much less likely.

One of our cats always had this - it is from eating dried food. Take some time and wet it down and try to get it all off. Then check more often to see how long it takes to get so crusty. It was yucky for ours, because the cat was white.

It's probably feline acne. Yes, cats can get acne, too, often from the oil from their face that accumulates on food and water bowls. They get the acne, then it scabs over on their chin.

It's not that big of a deal, but you can prevent it by making sure to wash your cat's bowls throughly with soap and water every day. It should clear up once you start to do that. Don't pick at kitty's scab, though!

Well if it isin't food... make sure it's not a tick or a sore from a flea bite and make sure you treat them with relvolution or advantage to prevent both. Now a day's even mosquitos are no good for animals.

Hope it's just food, but get it off either way! Try a warm wet compress?

Could be food could be a scab, try a very wet rag on the chin and see if it softens up and comes off. If not them it might be a scab. Good luck.

This might sound weird, but does she use a plastic food dish? For some reason, cats can get acne on their chin - I told you it sounds weird - from using plastic dishes. It happened to two of my cats. I switched to stainless steel dishes and it went away.

Chances are that she accidentally scratched herself while trying to get an itch and it drew blood. It's probably a scab. Check her back claws, they probably need trimming.

Might be food. Might be blood if she jumped from something high and scraped her chin. It happens sometimes.
