They can only get ear mites from another animal. So if your cat hasn't been around any other animal it isn't ear mites. Ear mites look like crusty blackish-brown stuff in the ear. You can clean the cat's ears with a Q-tip, you can't get to the ear drum, it is at a 90 degree angle from the opening. Once you have them clean, put a few drops of mineral oil or olive oil in the cat's ears for two weeks this will kill them if there are ear mites. If the cat hasn't been around another animal and it looks reddish in the ear then it could be an infection. Then you would have to take the cat to the vet. If you don't want to do the two week thing, then there are some other products, Accaraxx and Revolution that take care of ear mites, but you have to get them from a vet.

If it is ear mites, the office call will probably cost more than the meds themselves. But you need to make sure that is what it is. My cat had an infection once and I thought the same thing, but it ended up being a "yeast infection" is what they called it. If money is tight, ask your vet, or try to find one that will take 2 or 3 post dated checks to cover the bill.

It may be mites, but it may also be dry skin she is trying to scratch out. You can drop a few drops of warm baby or mineral oil in each ear and see if that helps. There are also some ear mite remedies available in local Walmarts, etc. that are relatively inexpensive. Most vets now charge an office visit PLUS any procedures such as ear washing they do. I always try working on mine in the comfort of home first, because she is not car friendly and the vet office stresses her out. Good luck!!

i thought my cat had mites & used mite meds for a few weeks. when it didn't clear up i took him to the vet & found out he had an ear infection. the vet's visit was $50, the medicine to clear up the infection was $14. so it wasn't too expensive to treat the infection. it ended up being expensive but only because he had to also get a rabies shot cuz he was due, he was put on a prescription diet & he was put on frontline+.

Look in her ears and if you see brownish or black small dots, go to Walmart or pet store and look for ear mite medicine. You put drops in their ears.
