Birds - November 2006

My cockatiel is about nine months old and she's developed a habit of grinding her beak together. Is that normal or ok? My previous cockatiel never did anything like that before.

Plus she has just a weird personality -- I have NEVER seen a bird like her before. When I let her sit ontop of her cage while I'm reading next to her or something she'll jump around and sing different tunes at different speeds and she'll play like hide n' go seek with me whenever I look up at her... she turns around and jumps and occasionally she bangs her beak on the cage. Is that a possible cause? Any answer helps. Thanks!

I have owned my bird for going on ten years, I am a caring owner, and I have made sure that he is comfortable, yet he still won't warm up to me. He lets me stroke him, takes food from my hand, and has landed on me once, yet he still won't get on my hand or shoulder. I have recently left for college, so he cannot be around me much anymore, but when I'm home he goes nuts when he sees me, giving his happy calls. I'm pretty confused at this point, who has an answer for me?

I have just bought an Alexandrine Parrot. She is lovely. She is 8 weeks old and had been hand reared. I am after some advise on what I should feed her to keep her healthy. Also can anyone tell me how to train her. I work all day and at night time I will be spending time with her. I woudl like to get her used to me and my partner and for her to be able play happily be herself when we are not home. I have set up the spare bedroom in my house for her. I have put a large rope around the room and have conected it to her cage. She seems to like it. She isnt doing much at the moment. She has only been home for a day, I am sure she will get more comfortable over time. I am worried I am not giving her enough toys to play with. I am going shopping today to get some wooden toys, I know I need to get edible ones because they love to chew. What else should I get her. I gave her some apricot last night and she loved it, what else shoudl I give her apart from the seed mix?

This is going to be my first parakeet, i've always stuck to dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, and rabbits. I'm getting it from Petco is this a reliable place? Any thing I should be aware of within the first couple weeks or days that i have it. Is it ok to put its cage by the window? should I cover up it's cage with a blanket? Can I feed them things like cheerios and other small snacks? Any other advice relating to my questions or completely random advice is very helpful!!!
Thanks

As far as I can tell, it doesn't confer any particular advantage for survival; prey animals aren't shiny---with the possible exception of beetles, with their shiny shells--and neither are naturally-occurring nesting materials or members of the opposite gender. So why is it, then, that birds such as crows and magpies will steal small metallic objects if given the chance?

Hey.. My male one goes in the nesting box and taps hard in it against the box. The female just look inside of it and does nothing. Is this a sign of them laying eggs? Are there more signs like this?
