on average you get 1 egg a day from a healthy young hen. They start laying aroung 5 to 6 months of age. They lay well for 2 years or so, then the quality of the egg starts to down hill. Like possably having thin shells or blood spots.(I have never had that tho) You also may not get an egg a day anymore. It may be every other day or so. and they probobly wont lay thru the winter anymore. All HENS are female.Roosters are Male and do not lay eggs.

Finally no more drival, answer is yes, bear in mind however that the egg did come first, you simply can not have a chicken without first having an egg. Watch out for people who argue vehemently that the chicken came first, often they are religous nuts who insist God made the chicken. Obvious crap cuz, you can;t have a chicken without first having an egg. Sorry, I gotta run, getting hungry for some KFC

Well the truth is : only hens lay eggs. If they are with a male the egg is fertal, if not they arent !!! Same as with any bird ! Roosters cant lay eggs.
