I have just bought an Alexandrine Parrot. She is lovely. She is 8 weeks old and had been hand reared. I am after some advise on what I should feed her to keep her healthy. Also can anyone tell me how to train her. I work all day and at night time I will be spending time with her. I woudl like to get her used to me and my partner and for her to be able play happily be herself when we are not home. I have set up the spare bedroom in my house for her. I have put a large rope around the room and have conected it to her cage. She seems to like it. She isnt doing much at the moment. She has only been home for a day, I am sure she will get more comfortable over time. I am worried I am not giving her enough toys to play with. I am going shopping today to get some wooden toys, I know I need to get edible ones because they love to chew. What else should I get her. I gave her some apricot last night and she loved it, what else shoudl I give her apart from the seed mix?

The best diet for you in your situation is the Pellet diet. The seed mix is a good supplement, but you have total nutrition in the pellets. Also give her fresh fruits and veggies, a few peanuts and sunflower seeds. If she's alone a lot, get her a mirror. You're right to get her the toys. Play with her with the toys to help her bond with you more. Hold her when you can, so you'll keep her tame. Isolating her in a room may not be the best thing unless you take her out a lot. She needs to interact with people. Good luck.

My mom has had a parrot for several years now and it actually leaves the cage and roams the house in the daytime, and will return to it`s cage by dark. They are very lonely birds who should not be kept alone. you should really concider getting another one to keep it company. they are also very loving birds. my mom`s will sit in her lap or on her shoulder for hours wanting to be petted. it will actually eat anything that you eat, and will eat it right off of your plate. DO NOT FEED IT CHOCOLATE. IT WILL DIE FROM IT! If you leave the TV or radio on, it will be talking in no time. start with a whistle, and G words. they pick that up the quickest. hope it helps. good luck

Fresh fruit, and vegetables, my African Grey loved broccoli, and cauliflower for the veggie, and apples for her fruit, but seed is is also a viable part of their diet.
They also need a lot of attention, and training which the way you describe your schedule, you have no chance in properly training your bird.

Good Luck, They bring lots of joy.

get a good pellet mix for parrots, don't feed avocado its poisonous, beware of things like Teflon if it overheats it gives off odorless fumes which kill birds. don't give all the toys at once, to prevent bordem rotate them. use destructible toys like cardboard rolls stuffed with paper and treats.

Give her mixed nuts, fruits and vegetables. If you feed her an apple, DO NOT give her a piece with the seeds in it. It can kill her.

Beautiful plumage. Just make sure it's not nailed to the perch, or you may have to register a complaint.
