It is probably preening...they pull oil from their bodies with their beak and coat their feathers...it's normal for all birds.

If he's plucking them to the point where there are bald patches, it's from anxiety. Usually this is caused by not getting enough attention and/or being stuck in a cage for too long. Even if you give him more attention and he becomes happy again, it's very difficult to get them to stop plucking.... some experts say its impossible. Also, a lot of times once there is a bald patch, the feathers won't grow back. People don't realize how much attention birds need. They're just like dogs or small children. Good luck

Is it an only bird? If it is it's lonely, and needs companionship, does it have yellow marking under it's wings? If so it's a female. if not it's a male. A female will do well with another female, but a male will want a female companion, if they have eggs, replace them with fake eggs you get from the store, for they will mate and try to raise babies continually, or get another bird of a different species, close to the same size as the cockatiel, if it's larger it will damage the cockatiel, if it's smaller the cockatiel will damage the smaller bird

My cockatiel is doing that too. He is probably just molting. It's normal. All birds do it around this time of year. He'll stop eventually.

If he is doing it excesivley, however, then I agree with everyone else that he may be lonely or depressed. Brids need as much attention as dogs, cats and our children do. Good luck and I hope your bird feels better soon!

After reading everyone else's answers, there's one possibility that's not listed. If he's plucking himself bald he may also have a vitamin A deficiency. If the bottoms of his feet are starting to turn a pink, that's an indication of vitamin A deficiency. Another possibility is if he's eating paint chips off the cage or toys. He may get a slow poisoning from it if it's toxic. A vet can test him for you in this case.

if he's just picking his feathers, then he is cleaning himself. You should put a small bowl with warm water for him to bathe in at least once a week. I spray my bird with water from a water bottle. He loves it and then cleans himself off.

If your bird is actually plucking his feathers, it may be due to boredom, a nervous condition, or he may have mites. They sell drops in the pet store to ward off mites. Make sure you keep the cage clean in any case.

the feather might be annoying him, or the feather is old and the bird it trying to get it out. and theres other things but if the bird keeps doing that s/he might bleed. so be careful!!
