My aviary just has dirt on the bottom & late today i noticed a mouse hole!!
What would be the best material to put in the bottom? Rocks? Cement etc.
Also, My bird ( galah ) never goes to the bottom of the cage, what is a good way to get her to do this?

My family has decided to get our first bird. What would be the best bird companion for first timers? We love birds, but would prefer an avian friend that will bond with us, and not just a finch, canary, or parakeet that looks pretty in a cage.

She is not resting, sleeping, etc. I know they do this when they are. She is favouring it. If I try to pick her up, she won't climb onto my finger with that foot first - she MUST use the other one. She is climbing to the top of the cage and back to the bottom, and her foot LOOKS fine. Does anyone know what could have caused this ???

Hi there, I rescued a galah about 3 years ago from the road, She had been struck by a car and was injured.
Since then i have kept her as she wouldn'tve survived back in the wild with the injury to her wing.

The last 4 months she has been plucking her feathers, mainly from her chest and her back, She now has no pink feathers in those areas, they are now white, fine and fluffy.
She lives in the backgarden in a large cage, About 6 ft high and 3 or so metres wide, This is under an apple an apricot tree.

She is fed wild bird seed, grass, bottlebrush & fruit, I have rang a vet to come see her, as it would be too hard to remove her from the cage, This is in about 3 weeks though,

What could be wrong with her, I have heard of the possibility of a disease spread through foot and beak within wildbirds. She has a few times had wild birds in her cage when there was a gap.

How could i treat her?

Thanks in advance.

I know she want to come out because she presses her head against the door and pushes digging at the ground. If she had roller skates on she'd be all over! What do I do? Is this a passing phase? I know it's intinctual to scratch and dig but will she always do this? Anything I can do to prevent it or calm her down? I'd take her out but at the beginning of day 3 with us she is telling us what to do and expects results. She want to be with us constantly, has little interest in playing or even eating unless I feed her by hand. She's adjusted well to her flock family, and loves my boys (ages 20 and 23). I don't want her to develop bad habits, this paper shredding is so far just a major annoyance.

I am certain that there are 2 types of eggs.. the fertile ones (the ones that hatch into chickens) and the non-fertile..(that we eat). Well I have a few friends here who, I am having trouble convincing. They are totally ignorant of this fact.. can anyone direct me to a site where this is clearly stated. Thanks..
