Should I get a budgie? Are they playful and/or affectionate, and do they bite hard?

Budgies are affectionate.
They play with bells, swings etc.
DON'T give them a mirror because they rather go back thinking its another budgie in the cage then see you and preen and dancing to you and you wont be able to teach the budgie to talk if you do have a mirror.

Females bite harder than males.
Fact

I have about 100 budgies living outside in a aviary, one female budgie preens my hair, 9 males and 4 females eats out of my hand and one attacks my top for no reason.
I have a lovely budgie in my room called Juno (my I.D) he preens my toes and fingers, Trys to say hello I think??

Budgies are wicked little birds ^.^ . They're not as hands on as cockatiels, but what they lack in cuddliness they make up in pure playfulness! Many budgies will learn to mimic the dog, the cat, and in my case my male cockatiels' mating dance complete with song. I love it! I had one budgie who loved doing somersaults around his perch. He would do this four or five times before clamoring over the top of the cage to start it over somewhere else. They are affectionate in that they will clamor over to preen your cheeks and eyebrows before rushing off to find trouble. They're very mischievous birds. I lost a small bulletin board to Buzzsaw, the hen who does the cockatiel mating dance.

Budgies can and do bite. It does hurt, but its no-where near as bad as a conure bite. They can and will draw blood but the wounds heal fast. If you get a bird that is hand tame -or better yet, hand **fed** - you should have minimal problems. Their bite is like a sharp pinch. You do get used to it and you'll find it doesn't bother you as much as you thought. Once your bird gets used to you, they should rarely bite, if ever :-) . If you're afraid of bites while handling your bird, use a small solid colored face cloth and play the game 'peek a boo' with it. That way the bird won't mind the towel and you'll save your fingers.

They do and can bite but once they get to know you they are playful and affectionate and a lot of fun. The trick is to touch and talk and play with them several times a day.

One thing I've told my children.

Anything with a mouth can bite. for Birds it's there only defence.

Do budgies bite hard ? Not compared to the larger birds :D But they can be very playfull, and can bond with you IF you spend time with them every day.

We parakeets, like you humans, have our own individual personalities. Males tend to be more playful/active than females. The males also are generally more vocal. We all love getting out of our cage on a daily basis to fly around and get exercise. Some of us (like my [currently] youngest, Jack) love to cuddle and be held and petted. Some of us are easy to tame. Some of us are impossible to tame. We bite only if we feel threatened, and when we do, it's really not that hard of a bite.

If you decide to get one, be sure to do your shopping when the group of birds in the store is active. Don't choose one that "just sits there", for there is likely something wrong with it. It's best to go with one that is displaying a lot of energy (signifying a healthy pet). Pick one with feathers in good condition, and one that is alert to what is going on.

Canaries make much better sounds/songs but budgies are more playful, they are dogs to canaries cats, funny that the Canary Islands is Latin for Dog Islands, named for the dogs that lived there not the birds, they were called sugar birds originally.
