I live in a home under 2 years old. We have some stress cracks in the house. Still covered under the builder warranty and they have patched up cracks. We also have a 10 year foundation warranty. What i want to know is how common are these cracks? Some people i talk to say yeah we have them this is TX. Others say they didnt get them with a new home. Supposedly this id due to the crazy soil here and the house settling.

I am about to go through a divorce. My house is 20 years old. I have a friend who is a real estate agent and her husband fixes homes. Together they plan to help me with supplies, etc, however, because they are giving me such a great deal, I have to do a lot of the work myself, such as painting. The problem is, I went back to work after 11 years, and my ex (who lives in the house) does nothing to help. Should I refinance my home, take 10,000 out of it, use that to fix it up so it's perfect, then get the most I can out of my money, by listing it Buy Owner? Or, pay my friend, to help me, although I'm doing a lot of the work and I'm having a hard time finding time to do it. I have 3 children and a full-time job. She suggests that i stay in the home and have him move out, but even after I refinance, my income will not be enough to cover my mortgage and all of the upkeep that goes along with a home of this size. Does anyone have any other ideas? Ever been in this situation? Thanks!!

- want to do a gone with the wind theme...
- we don't really have a "prom"... there's no dancing... just a banquet and some type of "performance" on stage...
- the room is fairly small... it's a ranch-type building out in the country... we were thinking "gone with the wind" would fit... but we are open to other theme ideas, too!

We just need lots of ideas on how to decorate!!
thanks!

Any ideas on how to work with it? What can I use to cover it inexpensively? Or should I just go wild with it and decorate like it was intentional?

Essentially I have a 3 br town home. The bedrooms are quite small. I have one bedroom setup as a master (my wife and I) with a full BR set (Queen, dressor, mirror, nightstand and chest) and the 2nd bedroom setup as my daughters room (it's the smallest). I have another bedroom that is kind of inbetween the sizes of the largest room and my daughters room. I'm not quite sure as to what that room should be used for. My study is in the basement (computer desk etc...). My wife wants it for a guest room. But she wants to put another small BR set in there. I don't feel comfortable with a bed in each room. I kind of want to do a study/br/activity room. Kind of like a sleeper sofa on the longest wall with bookcases all around and a small computer workstation in there. Kind of like a multi-purpose room. What is the 3rd and no use room commonly used for?

My old water heater broke down yesterday and I called Home Depot to replace it. The contractor came with the new water heater and before he installed anything.. said that my current water heater setup was not up to code. I assume this is some sort of building code / requirement. I wasn't too sure if it's even possible for him to charge additional fees which was not mentioned to me over the phone by Home Depot. The problem is, if I didn't let him do the work, I'll be without hot water for the next 3 days. ( I also have a baby at home, so not having hot water is IMPOSSIBLE). The additional charge came out to $591.00 + the cost of the water heater. The contractor said, the $591.00 is for labor / parts so that the new water heater is up to California code, includes a permit for the local building inspector to come and sign off if work was done correctly.

My question is... Does the new installation have to meet the new California building code?

My old water heater was install in1979

I am a beginner, and would like to pay someone to do the topstitch quilting, on some of my quilts that would be enhanced by detailed quilting. I do not have the room, talent, or machine to make this possible. But I know people send things away to be quilted, but where. I live in Chicago.

sorry for being so dumb but i have never done this before! I have measured one of the windows as 61 width and 54 drop, so which size curtains do i buy? For instance when you see ready made curtains in the shop and they have a measurement-is that for one curtain or the pair? Someone told me that you should buy curtains that are double the measurement of the width , is this true? I am so confused! and embarrassed for being so clueless. I hope this question makes sense!

I was looking at house yesterday, and it's got lot's of potential. However it needs some major renovations, particularly the kitchen and the bathroom. In some of the rooms, the floor isn't level, which leads me to believe that there could be a problem with the foundation.
Another thing that makes me suspicious is the fact that this house has been on the market for six months and hasn't sold.

My wife and I love the potential the house has, but aren't sure if we want to put that much work into our first house. I want to get the home inspected too, because of the age and hope to use some information from the inspection in the negotiating. It's listed at 75,700, but the owner is desparate to sell. Do you think we can get the owner to sell for about 55-60,000.

Does one of the large manufacturers like porter cable make nail guns for Northern Industrial Tool? If not them who does make them? I am curious if they have good framing nailers because the price is certainly better then most companies.

Looking for a cheap picture framer or someone who knows how to do it yourself in the Bay Area (near Milpitas/San Jose)...I have a 28x28 print that I need framed with a mat so frame size will have to be 32x32. Michael's quoted me $236, way over my budget. Tried art.com but $170-$200 is still over my budget...looking for anyone who can do it cheaper. Thanks!
