You can go with a cottage style room with a wood floor with throw rugs in natural colors. You can paint the walls a neutral color, like a light brown. Some wood and tan/beige/green furniture would look nice.
You can also go for the cool and modern look. Paint the walls white -- you can always change the room this way, plus it makes it look larger. Use a simple white rug, but NOT wall-to-wall carpeting. Use simple furniture. If you want, say, a color scheme of blue and brown, I suggest a tan sofa, and then blue/tan/brown pillows for it. Place photos on the walls in simple blue and brown frames. (You can use any color theme, this is just what I used for an example)

Your living space should be an expression of yourself - who you are on the inside, how you want your life to take shape, grow and become.
Pick colors that you find in your closet - if you like wearing a color, you'll probably like seeing it in your living space. Choose three colors that work well together to start with as your primary colors.
Paint the walls a neutral tone of one of your three basic colors (or do something funky with two tones). Every color has a neutral tone - do some research and find out where your colors neutral tone is.
Have a good mixture of textures - soft things, some hard surfaces, some woven things (baskets, for example), some slick things (glass), natural things (terra cotta pots, plants, jute, driftwood, sea shells - as it appeals to you).
Strive to balance things that are "hard" such as coffee tables and side tables with things that are "soft", such as upholstered furniture.
Bring in plenty of light, and have several different ways of producing artifical light - accent lights, regular lamps, overhead lighting, candles, etc. - so you can adjust according to the time of day/activity.
Avoid making the TV the focal point of the room (the first thing you see when you walk in, what all your seating is centered toward).
Keep the clutter to a minimum!!
Don't forget to add window treatments.

Well I will give you an idea of what I am working on right now. I just took down my brick fireplace and replaced it with ceramic tile. Smoky grey/blue walls with 3 pictures above the couch of a man and women dancing (bought at Kohl's each 79.00) A black and gray area rug under the coffee table. A simple contemporary coffee table at Ikea along with some really neat paper floor lamps also from ikea. Antique looking white wash piece of furniture (buy something simple at a thrift store) and paint it yourself, very inexpensive. Put black framed pictures on it with a glass vase filled with a few romantic flowers. Then add a touch of drapery, maybe red...go modern and drastic and touch the room off with some neat vases. Good Luck:)
