The best way to remove a popcorn ceiling finish is simply to scrape it off. That sounds easy, but it's actually a tough and dirty job. Before you do this, test the finish for asbestos by taking off a small piece with a putty knife and sending it to a lab for analysis. Asbestos was used in textured ceiling coatings until about 1978, but because some manufactured materials were left in storage, it can be found in ceilings applied as late as 1986. If the ceiling does contain asbestos, leave it alone if it is in sound condition or have it removed by an asbestos-removal contractor if it is deteriorating.

If there's no asbestos present, start prepping the room by removing the furniture. Next, if there's a ceiling fan, thoroughly wrap it in clear plastic. Remove drapes, and cover windows and fireplace surrounds. Use childproof outlet protectors to prevent debris from infiltrating. Cover the floor with large plastic dropcloths fastened to the baseboard trim with masking tape. Wear eye protection and a dust mask. If you are removing a small section, use a hand sprayer and catch the falling debris in a bucket.

You'll want to cover or remove anything in the room. After the entire room is bagged off or cleared out, the ceilings should be lightly sprayed with water to dampen the acoustic (popcorn). This makes the acoustic very soft which makes it quite easy to scrape off. The water also eliminates any dust that may be created in the removal process. Use something like a putty knife to gently scrape away the acoustic. You want to be careful when scraping so you don't damage the underlying drywall.

Spray portray is the least complicated way you additionally can use a curler with a deep nap circulate to the paint shop and ask them for this style curler Taking popcorn off is amazingly messy yet can completed with endurance I incredibly have completed this for a lot of my shoppers however the least complicated difficulty is to apply a million/4 inch drywall over it. it won't decrease ceiling and often is the least complicated and the least mess. while you're attainable you're able to do it or hire somebody and it won't take long then paint and enjoy.

Man i hate to say it but your screwed. The best way and will save labor time in the long run and should have been considered in "take off" is new ceilings. Tear out the old dry wall and put up new. Otherwise you could hang over the old, it will pass code as long as you use fire wall, ( min thickness ) which should'nt be a problem. make absolutely sure your hanging from a joist and not the old ceiling if you go this rout.

use a squared plastic, snow shovel and srap with the part that would be close to the ground against the ceiling. Then sand it off. I hate that stuff.

After it is painted, there is no easy way. Try an electric sander - don't forget to use eye protection and face masks.
