I saw this on Haley's hints on PBS, but I can't remember what he said. Water softener...cream of tartar...ammonia...baking soda...a combination of some of these things. Anyone else remember?

I have lots of little pets (ferrets and such) that I let run around my home but I also have lots of bugs in the basement. I would like to make the bugs stay away without using anything that can harm the little guys. It's mostly spiders, pill bugs, and silverfish. Any suggestions?

If I want to take a 20 minute shower, I would be standing in freezing water for the last 5 minutes. I am not sure if there is an adjustment I can make or if it's just because of the older plumming.

Im young and this is the first house for me and first time out of my parents house. Their house is newer and we would have hot water left after all 5 people showered.

why are UK homes made so small, stretch, narrow with little worm size stairs when half of the culture is over-weight and wide to pass a door? Busses, trains, homes, all made so small, and yet everybody is bigger than the culture I am. We have big homes and things are bigger, and yet we are petite.

Last year I planted some hostas here in central Indiana around the beginning late summer of early fall. I also planted a number of other perennials around the house. Most of my other perennials are starting to protrude out of the ground, but I see no evidence that my hostas are coming up. Should my hostas be coming up by now or am I a little over anxious. I'm wondering if they were killed off during winter. Does anyone know when they start protruding out of the ground. I've heard they are very hardy, but they are on of the few perennials that hasn't come up yet.

We are preparing the walls so we can paint them and we will need to install new baseboard and window trim. Currently we have old vinyl flooring which is ugly, which was applied over another old vinyl flooring. I am hoping to get a new cabinet, sinks, fixtures, and toilet in 5 yrs probably, which is when I would get nice flooring like stone, porceline, or ceramic tile. Should I get new temporary vinyl flooring (either a sheet or tiles), or just wait another 5 yrs until I get the good stuff? Would cost a min. of $100 for a sheet of vinyl.

I just bought a house and am looking for an inexpensive bed. I've been looking around and finding lots of platform beds for around $200. Apparently they use a futon mattress, which I've never slept on.

I have a nice pair of workout shoes and when I walk across a field to go workout the yellow, dead grass puts yellow stains on my shoes. I was wondering if I can clean them by putting them in the washing machine and dryer. I have seen it done in movies but I wasn't sure if it would damage my shoes or not.

Having seen what these traps can do to small animals (may it be rats, mice, birds or nontarget animals such as pets), shouldn't these traps be classified as torturous cruelty to animals? By definition it is illegal to torture any animal, so why aren't this barbaric traps banned?

I have also heard many horror stories about them on the internet. Mice ripping skin off trying to escape, rats getting their faces lodged in and suffocating, limbs being chewed to try and escape, high pitches screams of pain, all those horrible things. And I've even read stories of people throwing them - ALIVE - into the bin where they slowly die of their wounds, starvation or fear itself.

Are the use of these traps justifiable at all? People will say "it's just a mouse/rat" but nothing deserves to suffer like that. If anti-animal cruelty is so big in today's society why aren't these traps abolished? It doesn't make sense.

There are more humane alternatives that are more effective, but should they be banned?
