The lava is actually a type of wax. The liquid is water with a variety of chemicals added that change its density and viscosity. The real secret, however, is the coil of wire in the bottom; if the wax gets dislodged from the wire, then the lamp will stop working....

Therefore, never shake a lava light when the wax is molten.
