Soapstone is a very soft, light in color and pourous stone, it is actually so soft that it really does feel like soap and is great if you're into carving. I can't imagine why anyone would use it for a counter top though as it would soak up any liquid, stain like crazy and is so soft that you can scratch it with your finger nails!
I think that using this stone as a counter top material is a fad and the buyers a year or two down the line are going to be asking themselves, "What was I thinking!"

Soapstone is a soft workable stone, it is not like sandstone. Sandstone is a sedimentary stone. Soapstone is a metamorphic stone. It is very easy to work with and makes beautiful counters and sinks. It has been used for thousands of years to make vessels and decorative objects. You just polish it with mineral oil, and if scratched can be easily sanded with ordinary sandpaper.
It hold up very well, wears with age to a beautiful patina and character. Very difficult to truly damage.
If you want something that is "perfect" that will never change and wear this is not for you. If you want beautiful natural material that shows its character and use then you will probably like it very much.

I've heard of soapstone wood stoves because soapstone holds heat really well but I've never heard of soapstone counters. It's beautiful though. Good luck!

it is a natural, quarried stone, similar to sandstone, that has a waxy feel, and is relatively easy to work with and polish.
