We are preparing the walls so we can paint them and we will need to install new baseboard and window trim. Currently we have old vinyl flooring which is ugly, which was applied over another old vinyl flooring. I am hoping to get a new cabinet, sinks, fixtures, and toilet in 5 yrs probably, which is when I would get nice flooring like stone, porceline, or ceramic tile. Should I get new temporary vinyl flooring (either a sheet or tiles), or just wait another 5 yrs until I get the good stuff? Would cost a min. of $100 for a sheet of vinyl.

Vinyl flooring is very inexpensive, so if the floor is really offensive go ahead and replace it. I guess it depends on whether you're willing to put up with it the way it is now for five more years. Personally, spending $100 dollars for a floor that I like better and will last me until I can complete re-haul the space is nothing!

Oh, also... if you go ahead and remove the old layers now it will be much less work later on.

Five years is a long time to wait, I think. Since you don't want to have to remove 3 layers of vinyl when you are able to redo the entire bathroom, you can always cut a piece of remnant carpet to fit the room. Even if it needs to be replaced a time or two between now and the time of the remodeling, you'll have a nice floor, meanwhile. I know most people wouldn't actually carpet a bathroom, but I think the color and texture would be an improvement over the ugly vinyl.

Getting new temporary vinyl flooring would make a big difference in the appearance of the room. It would make you feel like you have made progress with it. You can go to the $ stores these days and they sell boxes of 10 ea 12x12 vinyl flooring sheets for about $10.00 a box. They are peel and stick and you can lay them with out having to pay someone to do it for you. Just a cheap and easy thought for you. The new appearance will make you feel better.

It depends on how much it bothers you. I've been doing some home improvement myself and I read that you don't have to pull up the old vinyl. It may not look so bad once you get the other work done. At least wait until you've finished with what you're working on now. If it's still hideous then I'd cover it. It's your house and you should be content with every square inch of it even when you're waiting.

Wait - if you get another layer of the vinyl when you eventually get the ceramic tile that you really want you'll have 3 layers to scrape off instead of 2

I hate waiting, but I would have to say wait. You might as well do it all at once. My problem is that if I start a project, I want to see it through until the end. It would kill me to wait five years.

I would wait that way you can have everything removed and redone at the same time.
