I have lots of little pets (ferrets and such) that I let run around my home but I also have lots of bugs in the basement. I would like to make the bugs stay away without using anything that can harm the little guys. It's mostly spiders, pill bugs, and silverfish. Any suggestions?

Plant peppers and marigolds outside. Use pepper spray (ground up peppers or pepper juice mixed with water) around the base of your house. For spiders, put hedge apples in pie tins in the corner of your basement (or hang in the corner where your critters can't get to them).

I have also heard that using an oily substance to wipe down the corners of your room after you clean will keep spiders away. They can't make webs on the oily substance (like WD40 or I guess even cooking oil - not sure).
