My nana gave me what she called a "komar" (not sure on the spelling). But it is a cast iron grill. it's flat on one side and raised edges like a grill on the other side. i have used the raised side a few times to cook some carne asada, but what do i do now if i want to use the flat side? She gave me some manteca (or lard) to clean it, but i'm not really sure how to do this. i want to be sure to have the raised side clean enough so it can face down; is this possible?
and does anyone know how I'm supposed to clean it? especially with the lard? Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I am a serious home cook and I want to upgrade my chef's knife. I own a farberware forged 8 inch chef's knife (it isn't as bad as it sounds) and it works fine, but it isn't professional. I want to buy either a Global 8 inch chef's knife (g-2 model) or a wusthof grand prix 8 inch chef's knife. The Global knife is about $30 more, but I am concerned that the grand prix isn't sharp enough or isn't as good as the Global. I wouldn't mind spending extra money if the Global knife is better, but if the grand prix is just as good or better, I would like to save the money. What should I do?

See here's my problem, I don't know how to cook. How embarrassing but true. So I kinda promised my boyfriend I would cook for us this New Years Eve before heading out to a party. I thought of it as a joke but he seemed to like the idea. I so put myself on the spot and now I'm freaking out. I was going to ask my mom to do the cooking but that's so not cool. Plus he knows my mom's cooking to well.lol
By the way he's not so big on sides and loves red meat.

& also, what kind of meat do you recommend I put in my black-eyed peas? Do you think I should have collard, mustard, or turnip greens? or spinach? What's a good New Year's dessert? Do you think I should have koolaid or soda? Sorry for so many questions.

The Grocery store where I live often has really nice, fresh whole chicken. I normally make chicken soup with it, boiling the chicken with potatoes ,carrots and leek. Sometimes I add some noodles to the soup.Do you have any suggestions for variations for the chicken soup? Or does anyone know any other dish I could make with the whole chicken. I don't have an oven or grill so it must be a stove top recipe.

When we have friends over, they are always shocked that our house still does not have a microwave ?

My wife and I believe that we have a perfect cooker to do what we need to prepare our food and own pots and pans

I have no complaints, and we are happy, maybe we are not "chuck in meals" people

are we alone, apparently James May ( Top Gear) has the same views ?

Oh, and we are only in our early thirties and been married for ten years

Maybe its just the way we where brought up ?

But my mother has had microwaves since day one, and I have had many meals out of them when I was a nipper.... maybe thats why ?

Love to hear your replies

Which one is good? Is steamer good option for steaming vegetables in a rice cooker?
P.S. Steamer comes along with the rice cooker as an additional accessory sometimes and is placed on top of the rice cooker.

Looking for prepared foods that can last for days or weeks at room temp. Excluding prepackaged foods and raw fruits, veggies, and nuts. For example I think cooked rice mixed with a bit of curry and wrapped in seaweed can last a few days if I remember right. Fruitcake is another good one. Any others?
