I am a serious home cook and I want to upgrade my chef's knife. I own a farberware forged 8 inch chef's knife (it isn't as bad as it sounds) and it works fine, but it isn't professional. I want to buy either a Global 8 inch chef's knife (g-2 model) or a wusthof grand prix 8 inch chef's knife. The Global knife is about $30 more, but I am concerned that the grand prix isn't sharp enough or isn't as good as the Global. I wouldn't mind spending extra money if the Global knife is better, but if the grand prix is just as good or better, I would like to save the money. What should I do?

Both are good, I prefer Wusthof (better handle, blade doesnt dull fast, ergonomic....). Global is also good but I think I am just used to my WT knives. My sister is a Global fan.

My suggestion: if you have a Sur La Table or Williams Sonoma, go for a test drive. Try them both out and see which you prefer.

Well you have two very good knives to choose from, I am a former chef (20+yr in trade, internationally) and have over 40 various knives in my kit, I never bought on name but function, and as a number have aready answered there are pros and cons with both, I have a 12" sushi knife from Global and a 6" boning knife from WT.

For the chefs type knives the Global are very good, with the solid handle and lighter feel, I would like it, the only real difference with the Global versus WT is the handle and it is heavier and a bit more durable.

I love the weight of wustof, heavy. Its a personal choice, both will last. Pick some up, how do they feel? Wustofs are a harder knife to keep a sharp edge, it takes daily work, so if you dont tend to keep your knives sharp, pick the global.

It is what you feel most comfortable "holding".

I prefer Wusthof. However it's your choice only.

The knife will last you a long long time......choose which is best for YOU and don't even think about the money......xxx

Happy New Year to you......xxx

Never heard of Global, but you can't go wrong w/ Wustoff or JA Henckels. I have Henckels and love them.
