Which one is good? Is steamer good option for steaming vegetables in a rice cooker?
P.S. Steamer comes along with the rice cooker as an additional accessory sometimes and is placed on top of the rice cooker.

I have a family sized rice cooker WITH the steamer basket.

I think the only drawback is that the steamer basket is not really big enough for all the veggies we need to cook for our family. Most of the baskets are quite small, so check that you get one that will suit your needs.

While I agree that you can cook perfect rice in a pan, I think that electric rice cookers are fantastic. Perfect rice every time, stays warm, you don't have to watch it, and it never boils over or scorches. BRILLIANT!

Actually I'm thinking a combined rice cooker/steamer is good. Btw. Never cook anything apart from rice in a rice cooker. My Oriental friends were horrified when I suggested cooking vegetables in it. I've now got a seperate steam cooker especially for vegetables and fish. lololol xxxx

In a basket? oh bother Steamed Rice Ingredients 1 rice 1 water 1 salt Instructions Let's begin at the beginning. Cooking rice is so simple that I cannot understand why so many people claim to have trouble with it. Nor can I understand how people can buy that instant stuff that tastes like the cardboard box in which it comes. Maybe the box tastes better! Instructions for cooking perfect rice are simple. Use a heavy covered saucepan. For size, figure 1-quart capacity for each cup of rice: 1 cup of rice takes a 1-quart pot; 4 cups, a 4-quart pot. Add 2 cups of water and 1/4 teaspoon salt for each cup of rice. Bring to a boil with the lid off and keep it off for about 3 minutes. Put the lid on the pot and turn the heat to very low. Let it cook for 15 minutes and then turn off the heat. Do not open the lid during this process, and let the pot stand on the burner for another 5 or 6 minutes. You are now ready to serve. HINT: ON COOKING RICE. When cooking rice use a heavy saucepan. If your pans are light stainless steel use a heat diffuser. It will help keep the heat even on thin pans. Remember, rice doubles in bulk so 1 cup will give you 2 cups, or 4 servings of a normal side dish.

if you eat plain rice, then the rice cooker can do without the steamer. i've owned multiple rice cookers with steamers and i have yet to use the steamer... since i like my rice plain. remember that when you steam something in the rice cooker with the rice, the juice and smell of the veggies, or whatever, is infused in the rice.

With is better:
You end up with more options for the same equipment, and can even use it WHILE cooking the rice if the design is right.

This will eliminate multiple dirty pots and such- I used to put in the rice, then set the aluminum steamer unit above, put in a few frozen chicken breasts and turn it on.
About the time the rice clicked off, I would put in the vegetables with the chicken if frozen, about 10 minutes earlier if fresh.

Entire meal in one cooking container with easy clean-up.

Why bother with a Rice Cooker? A pan; 2 cups of hot water to 1 cup of rice; very low heat; fold a tea towel round the lid fix on firmly; check after 15 mins; if water has gone (tilt pan to find out) then turn off heat and put back lid for a few mins. - it will steam a bit and fluff up.

Yes,Yes and Yes.
My kids and I love it. You don't lose any of the vitamin's or the flavor when you steam something. I have even steamed fish in my rice steamer. You can steam the veggies over the rice, season the rice say with curry, the steam will wrap around your veggies in the slightest of ways.
Also the in-door grills like a Forman you can grill anything and I do mean any kind of food you desire 'no soup' Try grilled carrots or beets they are amazing.
In your ricer you can even steam cake batter for an extra moist cake. just cover in clear wrap.
