it says in the recipe '1 cup vegetable shortening (not oil)'. what is that and what can i use instead ? any help i appreciate, thank you :)

i'M kind of going with a disney theme . Cause my family and my boyfriend are going to disneyland for my birthday and I want to cook them a theme meal. Any ideas of disney theme meal for a full meal and a sweet treat. Thank you so much. K. I need a simple nice meal with some kind of theme, something with meat , but no sea food. And what simple dessert can I make and what do I need for the whole full meal. The recipes I found only told me to pre-heat. One recipe called for non-stick cooking spray. Is there any substitute? Or is it safe to leave it as it is without burning the kitchen down?

So I just boiled milk to make hot cocoa because my microwave gave out. After I boiled I noticed there were some solid stuff in the bottom. (My sauce pan was completely clear before this.) So i ignored it and still made my hot cocoa. After mixing it all together with a cocoa mix I noticed that those solid stuff in my mouth felt like cotton. It felt like eating paper that was submerged in some liquid. I don't know what it was. It was just milk and cocoa mix powder! Can someone explain what happened???
