Shallots are a member of the onion/garlic family.
They look like enlarged, brownish, flat garlic. Not as big
as elephant garlic, but bigger than regular garlic.
Wonderful sauteed in stews, soups, e&. Milder in flavor than onion, sweeter and savoryer than garlic.
Find them in the green grocery section - ask if you don't
see them right away, sometimes they come in string bags.

Shallots are in the onion family and grow in clusters of 2-3 with each shallot looking like a cross between a large garlic clove and a brown-skinned onion. They vary in size from about 1 - 3 inches. They have a rich, slightly sweet onion flavor. A little less harsh than most onions. In a pinch, you can substitute onion, but it's really worth picking up some shallots.

A shallot looks more like a garlic bulb than an onion and is a member of the onion family (allium ascalonicum) which comes from Ascalon, an ancient Palestinian city, where it might have originated. The head has mulitple cloves, each covered with a very thin papery-like skin. They're pale in color ...from grayish to pinkish. The Jersey shallot is larger the the true shallot. The flavor is subtle... like a very mild onion. Can be bought fresh, or freeze dried.

A shallot is a member of the onion-family. Shallots are formed more like garlic than onions, with a head composed of multiple cloves, each covered with a thin, papery skin. The skin color can vary from pale brown to pale gray to rose, and the off-white flesh is usually barely tinged with green or purple.

Considered to be the gourmet member of the onion family due to its mild, delicate flavor, shallots are very similar to green onions, but develop in clusters of small bulbs rather than as individual onions. Shallot bulbs are small, generally elongated, and have a distinctively different flavor and odor as compared to onions.

Shallots are a source of potassium and are low in sodium. A 3-1/2 ounce serving contains 72 calories.

Shallots belongs to onion family. They are not round like red onions. The are probably the size of 2 thumbs. Expensive. Sweet and aromatic and they dont burn your eyes like onion.

I attached a picture for you. They look like onions except they are smaller and pointed
