The recipes I found only told me to pre-heat. One recipe called for non-stick cooking spray. Is there any substitute? Or is it safe to leave it as it is without burning the kitchen down?

If you use the waffle iron with out anything, your waffles will stick. You can use PAM or any non stick veggy spray. Go to the grocery store and ask.

Things You'll Need

* 1/2 tsp. salt
* 1 tsp. baking soda
* 3 eggs
* 1 3/4 c. flour
* 1 stick butter - melted (1/2 c.)
* maple syrups
* 1 1/2 c. buttermilk
* 2 tsp. baking powder
* mixing bowls
* waffle irons
* mixing spatulas

Instructions

* STEP 1: Close lid to waffle iron and plug in. Follow manufacturer's instructions for correct setting.
* STEP 2: Beat eggs well in medium mixing bowl.
* STEP 3: Add flour, buttermilk, baking powder, baking soda, salt and butter and mix until just combined.
* STEP 4: Check waffle iron to be sure it is hot. If the waffle iron has one, the thermostat indicator or light will show that it is ready.
* STEP 5: Open lid of waffle iron.
* STEP 6: Using a measuring cup, pour about 1 c. batter into bottom of waffle iron. (Check manufacturer's instructions if you are not sure how much batter to add to your waffle iron.)
* STEP 7: Close lid.
* STEP 8: Let waffle cook until steam no longer comes out of waffle iron or until waffle is light brown and slightly crisp.
* STEP 9: Remove cooked waffle with a fork.

Tips & Warnings

* Most waffle irons are nonstick. If you're worried about waffles sticking, spray the plates of your waffle iron with a light coating of nonstick cooking spray before you plug it in.
* Put leftover waffles in a freezer bag and freeze. Pop into the toaster to warm and crisp.

You should grease the waffle iron first. You could use vegetable oil. If you don't grease the iron then the waffles will stick!

I always brush my iron with oil before I put the batter in, but my bf just heats his up first and doesn't oil it and they turn out fine both ways.
