I know that the new husband is supposed to remove his new wife's garter (worn just above her knee under the wedding dress) as part of the reception, and she's supposed to throw it (or at least, this is the version I've always heard) like the bouquet.

My question is: why? What is it supposed to symbolize and what happens to the person that catches the garter? Where did the tradition come from, or did us crazy Americans just make it up? Is there a specific color that a bride should wear, such as white is the traditional wedding dress color?

I'm curious, because I plan to wear a garter at my own wedding, and I want to know why in the world I'm wearing it!

Ok so my friend is engaged and in the process of planning her wedding. She is working on the guest list and is having some disagreements with her fiance. Her fiance comes from a small town where everybody kinda knows everybody. He used to date this girl for 3-4 years in high school/college and they are still "friends" (I dont think they hang out or anything but still email every once in a while etc) almost 10 years later. Because of the fact they lived in a small town, a lot of his friends are her(the exs) friends as well, some even still really close to her. Is it wrong for my friend (the one who is getting married) to tell her fiance she does NOT want the "common" friends there (and some he isnt even that close to anymore)? She doesnt want them to mention her, or take pictures of them and show them to the ex.. etc..(I dont know her full reasoning though)He isnt going to invite the ex, obviously...but what should I tell her? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

We're looking for a judge, not a priest or minister of any kind, to officiate our wedding. I called the NYC clerk office, and they told me they could confirm whether someone was a certified officiant, but they would not release their list to me. Every web search I've done brings up various fringe religious officiants, but I haven't been able to find a single judge (either practicing or retired). The judge will need to go to our ceremony location in Brooklyn. Would appreciate any tips.

Have you, or do you know someone who got married and right before getting married were in a huge fight and then magically everything came together at the end? Or has someone ran into the church (or wherever) breaking up the ceremony to tell either the bride or groom they were in love with them? Or is this just all the stuff of movies?

He is german and proposed at christmas and gave me a plain silver band. It looks like a wedding ring and people keep giving me funny looks when they ask to look at my engagement ring. I would love for him to get me a proper one but how do I ask him. I love that he got me a ring anyway am just fed up with it looking like a wedding ring and not a traditional engagement ring. I don't care if it costs very little - I have simple tastes but I am a traditionalist and want people to notice that I'm engaged. This silver band will always be special to me but it's not a proper engagement ring so my family don't think I'm really engaged!!!!!!! Hope this doesn't sound shallow. I love him to bits and wouldn't want to hurt him in any way. Should I just stay quiet or explain that in england engagement rings traditionally have a stone in them. Honest - it looks like I'm already married. I don't care if it costs very little - I have simple tastes anyway.

I am on a strict budget for my wedding and have been advised by many not to give out favours because they are a waist of money and people just leave them behind at the end of the night. What do you think? Is it rude?
