Have the couple registered? If so, shop online from their registry, and have the gift shipped to their house. That would probably be the easiest thing to do, and would probably save you the most in shipping costs.
If you can't buy off their registry, you may want to consider a prepaid visa or mastercard that they could use to purchase something off their registry - you could always enclose a note that says something like "I was afraid to have a place setting of your china shipped overseas!" with the card, so they know you were looking their registry and thinking of them. (As an added bonus, if they got all their place settings, they can purchase something else!)

What about bedding? I don't mean a comforter. What about sheets? Do you know the size bed they have? I believe sheets thread count over 300 would be a great gift. Also towels some nice thick/big towels are also nice for a wedding gift. I got some nice towels for my wedding and I LOVE them. I wish I got more. I understand some people are overwhelmed with towels but I enjoyed mine. But I didn't get sheets and i wish I did. If you are familiar with thread counts, over 300 are the BEST. They are so soft and comfortable. Affordable and easy to ship!!!!

Calling cards or an international money order is the simplest solution and most appreciated.
A really wonderful special gift you'd have to work with his parents to do. Create a scrapbook with family photos, including lots of him, for that first Christmas. It will get overlooked at the wedding.
Cutesy photos are especially a hit. I had one of my brother when he was two and sent a copy to the new couple for Christmas. His wife opened it up expecting it to be yet another photo of his niece. The instant she saw it she knew it was HIM. Martin's complaint was that Brenda was so busy showing off the photo to her family that Christmas, she forgot to introduce him.

Send them a gift card/ cheque. It will be somthing that they will love and you know that you everyone can use more of. This way you know they wont be looking to return it or find a place to keep it if they recieve more than one. So money is the best option, they will love those gifts the most.

THINK I'D JUST SEND THEM A CHECK INSIDE THE WEDDING CARD. THEY CAN GET WHAT THEY NEED AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO SHIP.
