Well I have done a number of weddings and you can adjust almost anything....probably the dress is usually the most expensive item....or the food.
The cost of formal weddings has really gone up, but you can still be creative and save a lot. for example....it costs to rent a church....you can have it in a park, or private home and save. You can shop around for a cake....I did it one time and found one for $1.00 a serving...way less...or get a friend to make one if you can.
I learned to use silk flowers to save a lot. If you get real looking ones, add real fern (you get in bundles from the florist)..and baby's breath if you want, ...hang them in bouquets on the aisles and make them easily detachable....add the real fern at the last minute and you won't be able to tell they are silk....then have someone take them off following the wedding and use them on the food tables for centerpieces. Works great! These also can be used for bridesmaids, etc. if you want...or you can combine them with fresh flowers too.
You can sew a lot of the dresses for anyone in the wedding...find a good material source and save a lot. it is the little things that really add up...so work ahead to plan for them...things like wedding shoes, and slips, and candles, etc. It is hard to put specific costs....would depend on what you want and where you have the wedding. Figure out what you can spend...what is most important to you....then work from there. Also will family help?
Communication is really important for who is paying for what.
It is also fun to make planning part of the fun...like a bridesmaids luncheon...and check out the dresses, get extra help addressing invitations, etc.....or make an event out of looking for dresses....that is part of the fun!
Also allow enough time. If you are ordering dresses they want you to do it months ahead....or they will tell you it is too late.
What also really adds up is food for after the wedding. If you have a large wedding, invite everyone for a cake reception...then have family and close friends for dinner later. What matters is that you have a wedding that you enjoyed and remember....it can be totally simple and be beautiful. Your friends will help!

The rings are probably going to be the most expensive. Somehow, everything seems to cost $400 for my wedding. lol
The package, the airfare, the dress, the hotel...in total our whole wedding is going to cost $2,000, and we're having a great outdoor wedding just outside of Las Vegas. So, I guess you could say it's 2K for the wedding and the 5 day honeymoon.

The most expensive thing about my wedding was the rings His was $70 and mine was $85. It cost us $18 to get married. I got married in my work uniform and 2 hours after we got married I was working at my factory job like nothing had happened. Everyone was so mad cause we just eloped like that but I'm SOOO greatful that we did because we got married June 9th 2000 and my wedding date was set for July 22nd 2000 and my Dad passed away July 18th 2000. He was one of the witnesses at my quicky wedding and he signed my marriage license. I wouldn't change a thing, except I would have taken a camera.

The food for the reception cost the most - for just under 200 people. It freaked me that it was so high, and the bill for the full open bar seemed small in comparison!

The reception was is the most expensive. we're picturing about $3000 some odd dollars. That was a big poke in our budget. But you can make it work by making some of the stuff yourself and choosing the right food and stuff.

The most expensive thing at my wedding was the reception. We had to shop around for locations in our price range. The price was still high but in comparison to other places, it was reasonably.

Well, I didn't have a budget, but I still didn't want to spend a fortune. I think my dress cost the most and it was a little less than $600. That was cheaper than I thought it would be!

Honeymoom was the most by far and way over the budget we wanted to spend. We decided it was worth it because it was only going to happen once. as far and other stuff goes the reception was $5000 and the pictures were almost $5000. They were both at least twice what we wanted to pay but were they were the cheapest in the area!

We're having a small, intimate wedding, so definitely the caterer will be the highest expense. He'll cost us around $1,000. Our budget is to hopefully come in under $5,000.
Hope this helps.

Definitely the reception....Up to around 38K. Probably around 75% of the budget. That's for over 200 people though, top shelf, dinner and all that included. The band is the next expensive, 9K for one hour pianist and bass for cocktail hour, classical guitar for ceremony, and 11 piece band for 6 hour reception. I'm less upset about that price, since I love live music and have seen them perform many times. Amazingly, it's the lesser priced things that annoy me, b/c I know they are so overpriced...I mean, $3.50 for an invitation???
