Teaching - December 2006

I was certified in Elementary Education back in 1995 in Pennsylvania. What do I need to do to go back into teaching? Is it a matter of taking the NTE's again? I subbed for six months before getting a full-time job in another career back in 1996. I've got the teaching bug again and want to know what to expect to re-enter the field.

Thank-you.

So I'm working on a B.A. in English that has the major left (30 hours) a foreign language (12) the teaching cert (21/student teaching) and directed electives required for the teaching cert (18).

I'm scared that there aren't any jobs teaching English, or they don't pay so well compared to Math/Science.

I also eventually want to get to the CC level, Tenured hopefully. I know I need a master's, I was going to work on that while being a teacher.

Any suggestions?

I am going to start tutoring for free(to earn experience and then charge money). What ideas do you have for what I should do to be a good tutor. How should I prepare for a session?

Is it possible to get a Secondary Certification in Social Studies, to teach history/social studies at a high school level, after you get a degree in history. IE get the degree in History and then get the certification afterwards, possibly much later. I know a lot of states have "emergency credentials" but I'm not talking about that I'm talking about a real nation-wide recognized certification.

I was also curioius if you could get the certification from a different school than you got the history degree. I know most American Universities stipulate that you have to get at least half of your credits from them to get a degree from them but I don't know if the same thing is true for Secondary Certifications.

I once over heard a rumor that if you work so many years under Emergency credentals that you get the real certification but I have not been able to varify that.

So here is my situation. I've always wanted to be a community college english comp teacher. I have recently read that most of the positions are going part-time, Graduate Degree holders are now advised to look for a job outside academia.

I decided to look into the world of Secondary teaching for English. Where I want to live (eastern Texas) there is absolutely zilch.

I then turned my attention to what was needed: Mathematics teachers. When I first entered college, my major was Mathematics.

Changing gears, I looked at what I had to do major in that with a cert. Doesnt seem very devastating, especially at my college (10:1 ratio) and then the next bomb hits. I have to take a trig class, which the university says I havent completed the Col. Alg prereq (I completed it my fresh year, they have the transcript) and it says I need approval. The class I need has -THREE- seats left.

Family health issues, no money, When do you call it quits?

I am a substitute teacher doing a leave replacement. I have noticed that many teachers who do not have a clue on how to maintain their class make more than the ones who do have a better idea. Is it their degree? Is it the amount of in service points? You would think with all the in service points a teacher would do better! I know a teacher in my district who cannot handle her 1rst grade class. A student had noticably different behavior (didnt do HW, very quiet) and I told the mother about this when i saw her! (I subbed for her class often prior to getting the leave position). She talked to the teacher and the teacher gave her a non chalant yes that she saw the difference. When the mother questioned her why didnt she say anything about the HW, the teacher had no answer and walked away! I have subbed for her class many times and I know I can do a damn better job! Alas, I am the lowly sub who is waiting for a teacher to retire to become FT .

My directing teacher gave me a C+ when everyone I talked to got an A at the school I was at. Now I am having trouble finding a teaching job because of the grade and that she would only recommend me for a co-teaching position. I sent my supervising professor an email and asked him if anything could be done. He told me to never contact him again. I don't think the directing teacher liked me because she tried to talk me out of becoming a teacher. I had done very well during my two preinternship field experiences and had a 3.64 GPA until she gave me the C+. I also have been substituitng for three years before my student teaching experience and have never had a bad report.

Some people have strongly disagreed with me about this. I am a sophomore in college, going to graduate with EC-4 certification. I have been told by the university that student teaching is a must. Also, my mom had to do student teaching, as did my dad, cousin, and aunt. Lately on here, however, people say that student teaching is not required in Texas. I don't know what to think. What were you told?
