So here is my situation. I've always wanted to be a community college english comp teacher. I have recently read that most of the positions are going part-time, Graduate Degree holders are now advised to look for a job outside academia.

I decided to look into the world of Secondary teaching for English. Where I want to live (eastern Texas) there is absolutely zilch.

I then turned my attention to what was needed: Mathematics teachers. When I first entered college, my major was Mathematics.

Changing gears, I looked at what I had to do major in that with a cert. Doesnt seem very devastating, especially at my college (10:1 ratio) and then the next bomb hits. I have to take a trig class, which the university says I havent completed the Col. Alg prereq (I completed it my fresh year, they have the transcript) and it says I need approval. The class I need has -THREE- seats left.

Family health issues, no money, When do you call it quits?

I am a college comp teacher at a two-year campus in Wisconsin. Before being hired tenure-track two years ago, I spent 9 years as an adjunct at various schools. I have an MA (general) and an MFA in Creative Writing (poetry and non-fiction essay). I have health issues too, and was frequently broke. I taught comp part-time in Chicago and worked full-time as a researcher at an investment banking firm to pay the bills. When that got to be too much, I quit teaching and did the i-bank thing for another year and a half--and I was miserable. My husband and I both lost our jobs in the downturn of 2001 and we moved to Wisconsin. I started applying for teaching jobs even though there wasn't anything posted. I ended up getting hired at Marquette when someone quit on them at the last minute; same thing at a UW Colleges campus.

I've never wanted to be anything other than a teacher; though I have tried to do other things (that made more money), I have never been as happy as I am when I'm teaching.

The bottom line is that If teaching is what you really want to do in your heart of hearts, you will find a way--it's almost like the priesthood: a calling you can't ignore if it's really what you must do with your life.

Best of luck to you.
