What is with the levels?

Can anyone explain the basics of the site and what is the level system involved?

Levels are based on the number of questions you answered , asked and voted on. CLICK on yoru profile and they have the explanation.

I wish I knew. I have some internal goal to reach the next level up, But I'm not sure why. It just seems to give you the benefit of being able to answer more questions and rate other people's answers. Otherwise I have no idea.
