I want to get a bachelors in political science and then become a teacher. I am confused about the process. I would like to teach secondary level (7-12) in the social sciences. What exactly is the process through the ALS. Is it better to major in the area that interests you or get a bachelors in teaching and learning? I am in Utah. Any help would be useful. The Utah BOE does have a website that I have read over but I would like advice from teachers in the field. I would also be interested in teaching English, math, history, and political science.

I mean 'teaching' in every level of education, from K-12, bachelor-doctoral degree programs. I wonder if it has been a general norm or people have taken it for granted since centuries ago.

Does anyone here teach in a foreign country? That's what I want to do when I grow up. I used to live in China and Guam and the Netherlands, where I went to international schools and had American or some other English-speaking-country- teacher and I just really really think that would be great.
So my questions:
A. What did you major in in college?
B. Where are you/have you taught? For how long?
C. What are some interesting experiences you may have had?
D. How did you get in to what you do?

Hello, I am an English teacher in China. I'm really puzzled by the phrase "belong in" as in the following sentence:
-----------------------------
There are bound to be some words and phrases that belong in formal language and others that are informal.
----------------------------
What does "belong in" mean? Actually, as a Chinese, I have long believed that "belong to" is the only possible collocation for the word "belong".

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I was wondering what it is like to teach 3rd or 4th grade. What grade do you prefer the most, what do you teach in these grades, what are the kids like, and can the kids work independently? If a
Teacher could answer that would be great.

I think some teachers should be required to video tape their own classes and then be foreced to watch themselves teach.

I was 1 year, 3 months when I first memorized books, and 2 when I was able to pick up new material, read and comprehend the material, and make intelligent opinions about such material. Is this normal? When did you learn to do the things above? When did you start reading "Adult" books( I don't mean porn, but books deemed adult material)? I was 5. Once again, how abnormal is this?

At all? Like should philosphy classes be a part of schools teachings earlyer on instead of just in college and as an elective? I would think teaching people how to think should be a main goal of school and philosphy is basicaly just that.

I find that teachers fall into two categories - those that have more trouble with students and those that have more trouble with administrative tasks. I'm in the latter category. My classes are large and short (just got cut to 50 min). The two things I have the most trouble with and am trying to streamline are 1) attendance (attendance is very erratic and once I start teaching I dont like to stop). 2) noting who has done what assignments during class (speaking presentations, sharings, other projects). I really wanna figure out some really easy way to keep track of both things without getting sidelined from what I do well - interactions with the class. Some ideas I have thought of: Appointing a student attendance/assignment monitor (can rotate between 3 or 4) - just dont want them to be bribed by other students... Having a checklist that students come over and sign when they complete something, or if they come in late after the early attendance... Again - a concern with truthfulness.

This might be a difficult question to answer, not even my friends can answer them. Well, I know how odyssey is pronounced, but let's say I had to explain why it is pronounced as it is to a ESL student, how would I do that?

the 'o' is odyssey is pronounced as 'awe' and the 'd' is easy to explain, but HOW do I explain to 'y' and that it is not pronounced as 'why' but 'eh' (or something) as in 'did'?

And in 'Iliad' I can easily explain that the first 'i' is pronounced as 'ih' and not 'ai' when not followed by an 'e'. But how can explain the sencond 'i'? It sounds like an 'e'?

My wife is a mathematics teacher at our local high school. She teaches Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. In addition to teaching high schoolers, she and I sometimes have "class" together at home where she teaches me some of the concepts of high school math; I've always had a fascination with algebra and wanted to catch up on it. We try to make it into a classroom setting, where she occasionally tests me and assigns me homework - the one downside of your wife teaching you :)

I want to know if any other teachers out there also teach their spouse at home. In my opinion, I like being taught and I'm learning a lot about algebra that they never taught when I was in school.
