Gifts are very appreciated because it sends a message of thanks for spending so much time trying to educate me (or at least give me an A next semester).

It is always nice to get gifts because it makes you feel appreciated and cared for. Where I teach, the students' families usually don't have much money, so I usually get very inexpensive gifts. But it is the thought that counts.
The most useful thing is probably gift cards. I don't get many of those, but I know that a lot of teachers do. I get so many candles and lotions that I can't really use them all, but like I said, it is the though that counts and I appreciate all the gifts I get.

I teach at a low income school and would often recieve gifts from my students that were either purchased at a 99 cents store or were partially used. The children mean well, but it is usually items that I would not use, statuettes, glass pieces, stuffed animals, etc. I appreciate the gifts, but tell my students that they do not need to get me anything. Now that I do not teach in December, I rarely get gifts. I keep the items for a few years and then I auction them off. To explain the auction: My students earn tickets and every so often I hold an auction and the kids get to bid on prizes. Auction is a third grade word in one of their primary text and this also teaches them about so much more than just the meaning of the word.

I don't get a whole lot of gifts, and certainly some are more appreciated than others.
The one that meant the most to me was one I got this year from a former student. Last year I taught her how to do Soduko puzzles and she really enjoyed them, as do I.
This year, she bought ME a Sudoku puzzle book for Christmas. I loved because of the thought involved, and it showed that she still remembered something I had taught her. It was my best gift ever.

As a high school teacher, gifts are rare so they are always appreciated. The best gifts are practical ones- gift certificates to office supply stores or book stores. One year I got a really nice gift basket with microwave popcorn, candy, soda and a gift certificate to Blockbuster- I really enjoyed it! Just avoid anything that says "World's Best Teacher" or other cheesy stuff.

I don't expect them, but I do LOVE getting them! I am a School Library Media Specialist so I don't get a lot of them, but when I do...I know it is because I have made a difference in their lives. I teach in a relatively low socioeconomic area as well, and so they cannot afford much. It doesn't matter a bit to me because their gifts are priceless nonetheless!

in this instance, it really is the thought that counts...i am jewish and yet i always get a bunch of chirstmas things from students...i truly don't mind becuase the life of a teacher is filled with so many indignities and unappreciated moments, that when we are appreciated it makes the "bad" momenets not so bad...every teacher wants to know that they are appreciated and those little inexpensive gifts do just that....personally, i always liked gift cards to book stores

I'm appreciated of the gifts the students have gave me. This tells me that the students appreciate me for being their teacher for 3 months. So if they give me gifts they recieve a big party or cool activities like decorating Gingerbread cookies, and inviting one of my friends to dress up like Santa to tell what the students want they want for Christmas. So a reward of appreciation to me means a BIG reward of Thanks to the students.

I love it! I love any little thank you gift from my students! I enjoy getting even a little hand written card expressing their thanks for something I've helped them with. I never tire of hearing them say I've helped them!
