Does anyone here teach in a foreign country? That's what I want to do when I grow up. I used to live in China and Guam and the Netherlands, where I went to international schools and had American or some other English-speaking-country- teacher and I just really really think that would be great.
So my questions:
A. What did you major in in college?
B. Where are you/have you taught? For how long?
C. What are some interesting experiences you may have had?
D. How did you get in to what you do?

I majored in History/English and minored in Sociology. I taught English in Japan for two years. The entire two years were interesting. Highlights: visited Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, other locations in Japan besides my rural southern small town, and Australia. Married an Australian. Had friends/co-workers from all over the English-speaking world.

As a high school student, I took a Japanese class and later in college my old teacher set me up with local Japanese kids in the US to tutor. Recommendations from their parents and the Japanese courses I took really helped me get the teaching job in Japan through the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Programme. After returning to the US, I earned a Master's in Education specializing in TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and now I teach adults at an Intensive English Studies program in the US. My students are from all over the world and I couldn't be happier.

I probably wouldn't have ended up in Japan without a lot of exposure to Japanese living in the US. I grew up in an area with a huge Toyota plant so that helped. Those experiences I had as a teen really did shape the person I am and job I have today. Good luck!

Was an English major in college, then switched economics.. Taught in China for several years and loved it.. The pay is not as good as some other countries but the acceptance process was less painful. I went with an organization called journeyeast.org they handled all aspects of my travel and placement. I've included the links below.
