I think that school kids benefit from school uniforms. It removes the stigma of poor kids not having the newest style of clothing,
Having uniforms also removes the chance of girls wearing revealing clothing and messing with the boys' minds in class!

yes I think it would be a very good idea. After all some years ago, when I was in school, there were uniforms and this made the whole class equally dressed. No exceptions and there was no problems with it. The girls could go to the convent ( like a private school ) where they were taught by nuns and there was dissipline and order. Or they could go to public school, where they wore uniform also and there were no problems about that either. As for the boys, they needed to dress properly but there was no uniform. Parents had the choice.
There is nothing wrong with wearing uniforms! After all, the army, the navy, the postal workers, the nurses, etc wear it and this way it is easier to know who they are and what they represent. We know where they belong and it is easier to identify.
With everything that happens now in schools, I believe it would help noticing someone who do not belong in that particular school.
ID is also an excellent idea.
Aren't we supposed to always carry ID anyway, il case something happens to us?

I teach at an inner city charter school where the students where variations of the same uniform everyday. Having never worked for a uniform school before, I can tell you that one thing that has been eliminated is the desire to have what another student has. Students are not allowed to wear jewelry or anything else but the required uniform or they are sent home. Wearing the uniforms cuts out the "I want what you have" thinking...

I teach in a public school district that was the first large urban school district in the nation to require uniforms for K-12.
Here are some stats and info:
After two full years of required school uniforms in grades K-8, districtwide school crime in those grades is down 71 percent.
In many schools with uniforms, the rate of student absence has decreased, which means more instructional time for students and more ADA revenue to the school district.
School uniforms help to level the playing field. The children of millionaires and the children of very limited means attend school side by side. In uniforms, such huge differences in socioeconomic status are minimized. Students do not feel falsely superior or inferior because of their clothing. Fewer students are ridiculed about their attire when potential critics are wearing the same thing.
Basically, uniforms have proven to be a positive in terms of education. And as for ID's, in this day and age, it's unfortunate, but necessary. Especially in high school, when some of the kids look like adults and an adult that looks young could just walk on campus w/out one.

I think at the elem. and MS levels it is a great idea to have uniforms, but nothing too geeky. Just something simple like blue jeans (plain) and t-shirts (either plain school colors or with the mascot on them somehow). I work for a MS and see daily what kids go through trying to be in the "in" groups. Their self esteem can be devastated because of not being able to wear what is "accepted" that particular year. It is also a matter of girls wearing clothing tha tis suggestive or revealing and little boys' hormones going rampant! Normal part of MS, I realize, but revealing clothing doesn't help. I always tell my young ladies that I do not appreciate the boys gawking at them in that manner, so not to give them a free show! It is a matter of protecting the girls' self respect.
Wearing uniforms of some kind would stop some of these problems. Our school currently does not require uniforms, though, I think it will only be a matter of time. The second largest school district in our state just went to uniforms for MS and elem. this year and we are watching how that progresses. Seems to be doing extremely well so far!

Yes, I think that if students wore uniforms then when the kids that cannot afford the "in style clothes" wouldn't be picked on so much. I have seen several really great kids be outcasts just because they couldn't afford the clothing others were wearing. I feel that too many people are labeled with a title before anyone ever tries to get to know them. However I don't think that there should be one style of uniforms for each school. I think that if there were three types of uniforms for them to choose from each day it wouldn't be so boring.

I think it is a great idea. I should first confess I am a bit prejudiced. I went to Catholic Schools through elementary school and high school. But I did hate the uniforms then:) I also send my kids to Catholic Schools--which still have uniforms. And I teach second grade in a Catholic School. Now that I have revealed by bias--let me tell the objective reasons I favor uniforms. It is good for kids that either can't afford the newest fashions (or their parents won't buy them or they are too nerdy to pick them out). It is good for parents in not having to buy so much stuff. It eliminates all the problems of dress codes. You do not have to worry about inappropriate clothing e.g. overly revealing, inappropriate sayings, on T-shirts (or elsewhere), etc. With older kids in many parts of the counrty there is big problem with gangs and gangsta clothing. Uniforms eliminate that problem. There are studies that show students are better behaved in schools where uniforms are mandatory. There are studies that show students do better academically in schools where uniforms are mandatoy.

Honestly, I'm such a promoter of individual freedom, but I have to say on this one, I think uniforms are fine. I really think it's a decision each school or school system should make for itself. There are more pros than cons and I think the writers above have clearly outlined all or most of them. I went to private school for one year, the 10th grade. To my surprise uniforms were what I liked best. We had 4 different styles (for girls, 2 kinds of skirts, shorts, or pants, all khakis) and 4 colors of button down to choose from, and any blue or white (school colors) sweater or sweatshirt. Honestly, it was a loose policy and students had a lot of freedom with accessories too, so students who wanted to stand out had ways. The best thing was that I never spent too long getting ready in the morning. The same school now has no uniform policy, and I'm sure it's now more elitist than before, too. Ironically, my public junior high in the same city has adopted a similar uniform policy and it's great. Parents and teachers love it. That school is full of poor kids and you honestly don't really see who has how much money.
Kids who think they can't be individuals should realize that their words and actions will really determine what others think more than their labels.
I'm such a social liberal and really, really big on individual rights but having experienced both ways, I'm totally in favor of uniforms.
Guess I'm too old to comment on IDs because we never had such a policy. I'm not surprised those policies exist. There are always teens from other schools wandering around, and other folks around campuses sometimes that don't have any real business there. For safety reasons, it's not a bad idea. IDs immediately set you apart from those individuals, and also identify you to staff who don't know you but might need to quickly in certain situations. If teens didn't lie so much, they probably wouldn't be mandatory.

The ID this - yes, only because of security reasons. Uniforms seems like a good idea, but here in the Pacific Northwest we are just not ready for it. We have a handful of schools that do and there is still composition on things like NAME brands - did you get you uniform aT Walmart or THE GAP? Then people cant find them. I worked in retail for about 6 weeks (MACY*S) grandmothers, aunties and other relatives would come in looking for certain colors and plain sweatshirts, sweaters, shirts and pants - we never carried them at our store and they said that they have looked in other stores and cant find them anywhere.
I also was the PTA president for awhile and saw hows clothing is so important to kids. My boyfriends son goes to a school where they wear uniform and his 1st day of school he wore the wrong clothes (LOL) its a uniform! He felt totally out of place, the next day he wore another brand, to "fit in".
So if you are required uniform or not - there still well be a competition in style, brand - new clothing or handy-downs.

ID's, everyones has some sort of identifications almost all their life and it's not a bad thing. It's a good thing to be identified wherever you go in case anything happen, good or bad.
Uniform is a good thing too, it acts like an ID just the same. It tells what school you're from, how proud you are of your school, and you can save your parents finances big time. You can save the money for university or some important matters instead of buying expensive clothing's.
