hey dips,
why dont those teachers (called that wat even though they dont teach any solid stuff) have a brain like that of yours. they make us write all the notes and the worst part is correction(though I never get them corrected). Notes are only for those who are too good or those who are too bad in studies. The brilliant guys learn from notes after completing the books. The dumb guys study only from the notes(if the have written). And those who are not a part of either of them will keep asking these questions at laest till the completion of schooling.

1. When you take notes in class you are using more parts of your brain... you are hearing, writing and seeing the information. This will help you remember it better.

2. When you take notes your brain is compartmentalizing the information When I teach using notes, I find that my students can remember related topics better. (brain remembers what information went together better)

3. The goal of a teacher is not just to give information, but to help you see and apply it to real life. Textbooks do not always give good examples. Teacher input can help make the information more "user friendly"

4. It is easier to take home notes than textbooks. OFten, there are not enough textbooks for all students to take home. AND sometimes those textbooks don't always come back.. It is cheaper to replace notes than a whole book.

5. Some students are not quite able to pick out what is important from a huge text book. Therefore notes make the information that will be more tested, more attainable.

Actually writing notes have many advantages:

1) You remember the points at which the instructor mentioned they are important.

2) You can write extra examples that seems to be easier than the ones in the text book.

3) Notes summarize the main topics in each session.

These are the reasons I can think of right now. Best of Luck.

Notes are intended for personal use. You make a note of something and then when you read it the information that went along with it in the text book is supposed to come to mind. It's an easier and effective tool used to help you retain what is written in the text book. It's similar to when you make a grocery list out for yourself. On the list you might put "Chicken Soup". You know (because it is your own personal note) that you only want Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup in the family size. "Chicken Soup" is your note to help you remember. The other details are in your mind. Have a wonderful day!

Your class notes are a kind of supplement to your text book. Notes are closer to the thinking of your teacher/professor and likely to be closer to exam questions/answers.
Study first from notes and skim the text.

In some schools, you are not allowed to take the textbooks home and you have to study for a test. Instead you take the notes home. The notes explain the main ideas or the key ideas of the chapter or lesson. When you are doing your finals, you use the notes to study.

Notes you take are in your words. There are numerous strategies that help us remember when we take notes (Venn Diagram, etc...) but asking you to take notes allows you to decipher the information the way you would like to. This (taking notes) is absolutely critical in college and some professional fields. Being consistent and comfortable using a style or strategy of note taking will greatly benefit you in the future.

depends what level you're at.

At a preuniversity level your notes will actually be more in depth than the text book.

At a university level the notes serve as guideposts though textbooks. The plural'simportant here because one book lone will get you nowhere.

Also, you're more likely to understand what you wrote than somebody else.

In my experience, notes helped me to remember key words, clarify unclear information and they actually help you when taking a test. When you right stuff down you are more likely to remember it versus just reading a textbook. I don't think notes are as important on the lower levels as they are on the college level.
