I recently switched from being a college prof to running a GED program. Every major study suggests the GED is basically worthless, for example, 1% of people who get a GED, eventually get an Associate's degree (two-year program). Every study also indicates the effect on income is negligible to the point of being irrelevant. Yet I see GED professionals holding meaningless conferences and suggesting interventions that--looked at with an informed perspective--really seem close to psychotic. Is it because these teachers are totally clueless or because they are stuck in a profession where they have to legitimize themselves (even though they're not). P.S. After six months of this B.S., I'm quit. I have a Ph.D. but I think I know how the underclass sees life. I got kicked out of high school, and through years of self-searching figured out no one could help me but me. (The data lots of these organizations submit is fradulent, but that's another story).

In the past teaching was one of the noblest professions. It is difficult and cumbersome. One day I came across this piece of poetry. It translates as follows:

“Stan up and pay the teacher his due respect”
“As a teacher is so close to being a prophet”

What are your comments?

PS: Serious people only. Foul language won’t take you anywhere.

As a teacher I never tolerated it in my class room. One student, who was called down on his use of the f word, told me that a lot of teachers talk that way. Where are the role models?

Basically I give them a sheet with the lyrics with some words blanked out, and they have to listen and fill in the blanks. What's a good song to play? Of course, the song can't have sex, drugs, cursing, etc.

I really love kids, and exercising, and teaching people things! Are there any Physical Education teachers on here who can help me find out what it is I need to get in the correct path? I am only 20 right now, but I am working full time as a Legal Assistant, totally not the right route for my ideas and wants in life! I don't have very much time on the phones, or college websites looking up things about jobs while at work and no internet at home, plus colleges are closed when I get off work! ANY help would be great! Thank you kindly!

I am in highschool and i want to be a teacher. I am in a program that has me go observe at elementary schools. I have to teach a 15 minute lesson how to follow directions. I kind of have an idea on what to do but i dont really know what to say to them like the "moral of the story" sort of thing . I thought of drawing symbols on a piece of paper and not letting them see it but give them directions like "put a oval in the top right hand connor". Then at the end we'd reval the picture and see who followed along the best. But my problem is i dont know what to say to them . Thanks for all of your help!

I understand the degree requirements for becoming a teacher, but I need to know what school districts would prefer more: (1) B.S. in History or (2) a B.S. in Criminal Justice with 24 credits hours of History.

The reason I ask is because the place that I am stationed doesn't offer a B.S. in History; instead, it has Criminal Justice with additional courses in History.

I have applied for a teachers position for the upcoming school year (Aug 2007). I mailed my resumes in January. I know that the schools in this district send out their letters of intent to current teachers in March during Spring Break. Should I send a follow up letter to the school that I have already sent my resume to? Do I need to call them? And what should I say? Thanks for your help. Only answer if you are serious and know what you are talking about. Thanks
