I have a bachelor's degree in Business Finance and have been working as a credit anaylst for a large corporation. I recently had a baby girl and thought summers off to spend with her would be nice. How can i become a teacher for either elementary or high school without going back for 4 years of school? I am in Texas, in DFW.

You only need to get certified. That WILL take some college courses, but, depending on which state you live in, it may be very few. My sister did it in the equivalent of a full-time college semester. You'll also need to student-teach for a semester (it's like an internship for any other profession).

Some states allow you to substitute teach without certification, and if you do that long enough, a principal might recommend you for auditing the exams.

Sorry, I don't know the specifics for TX -- only NM, ID, and some of WA.

You will need at least one semester of student teaching, which will have to be done during the day. And possibly a few education courses. It wouldn't be an easy road to getting certified. It will take commitment on your part.
And you need to decide what you would want to teach. It certainly would not take you 4 years. But also keep in mind that some states require a Masters' degree, not sure what Texas requires.
Good luck!

First of all, you should not be looking into teaching if the only reason you want to do it is to have summers off with your daughter. Teaching, and becoming a teacher, takes a lot of time, work and dedication. It's not something that you can take care of overnight. So please think about the real reason you want to teach... if it is to have holidays and summers off with your daughter then don't bother.
If, however, you share the passion for knowledge and learning that it takes to be a teacher... look into your local colleges/university. I'm not gonna lie, it's going to be expensive and it's going to take time. With a bachelor's degree you can most likely sub in the school districts around you. You may even be able to teach in a private school. Also, you can look into preschools, usually they just require a HS degree and a love of kids.

Hey I am from the DFW area also and I know it is really easy to substitute. But honestly I wouldnt do that if I was you especially since you already have a job. With subbing they just call your house and ask if you would like to sub that day and you can say yes or no. I dont think its worth it actually. I know u want to be home with your child for the summer. Remember you have to make sure you can handle being around someones else kid all day!!!

There are programs at most Texas universities that can be applied to your degree. It may be as simple as taking a few classes pertaining to teaching.
You should check your nearest community college for online programs. I know San Antonio has at least three that work with teaching careers.

Try ACThouston.com. They are an alternative teaching certification program. You will be able to work while you get certified. It is a very convenient program. I am in this program myself. Also if you go to SBEC's website, they will give you a list of the requirements and programs accepted by the state of Texas. If you are not in Texas, go to your state's board education website and they will list the same info.

I would have thought a person who has a bachelor's degree in business finance ought to have the intelligence to find out the answer to this question without posting it on Yahoo Q&A.

Just as a suggestion have you thought about phoning the local college re courses.

It will depend on who you wish to teach and to what level.
