Regardless of the subject, self-esteem is paramount for both teachers and students.
"Teach us how to think, not what to think."
Without self-esteem students won't have the courage to explore subjects on their own, even if they enjoy it. What do you think Thomas Edison would've accomplished if he had no self-esteem?
Do you think Einstein would have come up with the theory of relativity if he didn't have the self-esteem to face the possibility of being wrong?
As far as teachers go, I think not having self-esteem does great injustice to the students. If all a teacher can do is read from the textbook because they lack the confidence to venture beyond it, they not only limit themselves, but more importantly, they limit their students.

Self - esteem is essential in life, it is the basis of all aspects of life one cannot separate Education and Life. So self esteem is otherwise known as Self - Belief. Self-esteem can give students the needed confidence boost to tackle difficult tasks or to persevere and succeed in difficult circumstances. The self-esteem must be based on real accomplishments, however, and too often teachers make the mistake of trying to raise self esteem through compliments and praise that are not backed up by real accomplishments. For example, when a teacher tells a student, "You are really intelligent" or "You can accomplish anything you set your mind to," it often results in diminished academic effort because they receive such rewards without the need to persevere or work hard or learn material. Students know when they have accomplished something special when they work hard and fight through barriers to succeed....this type of self-esteem boost is priceless.
