If you are a beginning teacher, I'd highly suggest that you start out in a much smaller school than Houston schools. If you aspire to work in Houston schools, I would advise you to get some years of experience first. A system that large could be a shocking experience to jump right into for a young teacher. There are many schools where you can have portions of your loans paid off for you. Direct your questions about this to either your college counselor/advisor or to the state department of education where you currently live.

I didn't know there were benefits. ha ha My aunt worked as a school teacher in Houston and the kids were just flat out disrespectful and rude. She was pretty good looking too, so it made her job even more difficult. Needless to say she ended up leaving and getting a new job after a few threats. With things how they are now in Houston, I wouldn't think being a teacher is exactly "safe". Even more so if you are a female teacher.
