I think some teachers should be required to video tape their own classes and then be foreced to watch themselves teach.

As a teacher, I believe that every teacher should video their own class not out of obligation but as a tool for self-improvement. I feel that many times teachers, and every other human being, can become complacent with their method of doing things and they often perceive things much differently than their audience. I think if we look back on our school days we can all think of a teacher or several who had an annoying habit which made that teacher memorable not for their great lessons but because they always spoke in montone or smacked their lips when they spoke.

I know that in my own experience when I was required to video tape my teaching I was able to see myself through my students eyes and in turn this helped me to tailor my lessons and my teaching style to suit my audience rather than what was comfortable to me.

Don't think it would work. The teacher might not see or want to see anything wrong with their teaching skills.
Another problem is with the classroom books. It has been found that the text books and /or the teachers guide book has the wrong answers or information in them.
It has been found that the publishers failed to verify the correctness before sending the books to press.
If a teacher does not have much knowledge about the subject they are teaching, then they really aren't teaching-just passing on bad education.

You should become a teacher so you can do a better job.
The first thing teachers will say is are you going to pay us extra.
Because that takes more of their time. Feedback programs
for teachers are great and important. Figure out how to implement it. start a program in your school. get a videocamera.
ask your teachers if you can tape them. offer to give them the tape. do it out of compassion, wanting to help. most teachers i know encourage students to tape classes. see what you can do to make your idea come true and help teachers be better.

Teacher bashing on Christmas Day??? Tssk....tsssk... Do you think that teachers do not realize how they teach? It might be a good learning tool if they could watch others teach...or if students like you could select the teachers you feel to be most effective and let those be the ones other teachers learn from.

We do that already. Most teachers who are truly committed to the profession (you know, they one where we are overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated) do many things to improve both our subject knowledge and our teaching skills. The teachers who are only there to earn a paycheck aren't introspective and do not last long in the classroom.

as a teacher, I have learned very much about myself and what does and does not work in my classroom by watching video of myself and my students....would be a great yearly or semi-yearly appraisal instrument

Maybe some of them, but not all of them. It depends on whether it's a good or bad teacher.
