What are the rewards of being a college professor? How long did it take you (the professor) to get where you are today? And finally...is the pay good?

The average pay for all the college profs in the USA is probably about $75,000 a year. That is way less than many of them would make if they were out in the business world, because, after all, a lot of them are pretty smart. Sometimes you hear about a prof who makes $200 or $300K a year, but that is a very small select group in the elite universities... that's like picking out the CEOs who make $10s of millions. It happens but it's rare.

So, you don't become a prof for the money. You do become one because there is some subject that is so fascinating for you that you are obsessed with learning EVERYthing that you can about it. Most of the profs I know are literally the best experts on their special topics in the country, if not the world. That's how they got to be profs in the first place, by being absolutely the best at their subjects. So, if the idea of studying that hard appeals to you, then you are on your way to being a prof.

And you have to like to teach. I figure I have taught over 20,000 classes. Wo! THat was a lot of kids who got put to sleep. hahahah! If you don't enjoy walking into a tough crowd and trying to win them over to your side, while actually getting some work done, then being a prof is probably not a good plan.

The other thing that is certainly great is the time off. It is outrageous how much time off we get. But that is the upside of the pay being less than the friends we graduated from school with.

Forget that stuff about hitting on the students. The last two guys around here who got involved that way were immediately history, tenure or no tenure. None of us in the Faculty union wants to stand up and defend a prof who got caught playing games with one of his students. Your career would be in the toilet in no time flat.
