I recently just moved to a suburban area. I need to get some private students to get income. Please teachers/musicians let me know how you get your private students to come to your home? What are the precautions, tricks and ideas? Many thanks!

Put an ad in your local paper, ask school music teachers or band directors to let their students know about your services, ask that the schools put a notice in their daily bulletin, talk to your local or near-by music stores about your skills,...

I would think a precaution might need to be that you will be working alone with a child and these days that can sometimes be risky business. I would ask that the parent come along and possibly wait in the next room as you teach the lesson to their child. That would be for your own protection. Sorry. It's terrible that we have to think of junk like that these days, but you do need to consider it.

How To Find Piano Students

Put together a resume and visit the music teachers at local schools. They get requests for referrals to private teachers and if they know you exist your chances go way up. You can also try advertising in a local paper or at music stores.

After doing those things you could always try an age-old approach. Go door to door in your neighborhood and surrounding ones. Many people will appreciate someone who would take the time and interest to meet them. Sure not all people are looking to give their kids lessons, but you might ignite a few flames of interest.

Put an ad in the local paper or post fliers on bulletin boards around town. Include a few bullet points on your credentials or teaching experience. Ask the local schools to let you advertise in the PTA newsletter or ask to do a handout for students.

Try advertising through local music-supply stores and by offering your name to local school musical instructors. Interested students often go to their music class teachers or band instructors for names of private musical instructors.
