Security - October 2007

Ok so my Dad keeps my internet time limited to an hour for “discipline”. But I go online anyway late at night. So my dad is this computer engineer and knows everything about computers and how they work. Sometimes he logs into my computer when I’m not home and checks at what I’ve been doing. He says he can see what sites I’ve been to and at whatever time. Thus, he catches me every time. Can someone tell me what they think he can look at to tell I’ve been online? Do you think he uses the temporary internet files or maybe my Comodo Firewall? How do I prevent this?

Have Wild Tangent been known to harm the user of its game console? Does it steal and use your personal information such as name, phone number, credit card number, etc. OR does it just do what it says in the User Agreement which allows it to collect no personal identifiable data such as how long a game is played, how many times a game is played, the type of video card the computer uses, etc. Let me know if Wild Tangent game console is safe to have. I really like the games.

They are saying a standard account is better, because the UAC asks permission before you can perform a task, but it does the same thing in an admin account. How is an admin account less secure. UAC is still on admin accounts.

when ever i try to open a file it asks how u want to open with and iam not able to open it at all. no program can open the files. be it in pdf format or winzip it doesnt work. what can i do. in the internet explorer address i get coolpics site which doesnt open. please help

a week ago my computer started acting weird i get a pop up every 3 minutes that says i need to download a "anti-virus" when i click no it goes away and clicking yes brings you to an online page showing a "scan" of my computer telling me that it is in critical condition and to remove all infected files i must download thier program...................
i know this is b.s. but when these started poping up i lost all administrative powers on my computer. i have no access to control panel or any .cpl files. i cannot find a back door of any kind, a warning saying to contact the system administrator is displayed as soon as i try.........
i tried booting it in safe mode with networking and instead of going right to windows it gives me the option to log on as owner (normal) or administrator (owner was administrator and this option was never there before) but even as administrator i cannot access anything. registry is locked too.........

ya i was wondering if there was a program or a way where i could push a combination of keys and it just locks my computer so that the only way i can get back on is to put a password and it leaves everything else running....i sometimes watch my niece and she hits keys and messes things up:(.......please help :)

Hi all! i need help with my laptop. i used to be able to Download stuff on my laptop all through the night because of the sleep key function.

everytime i pressed the fn+f5 my lcd would turn off and my audio icon would turn red signifying that its also off or on mute(its blue if its on).
when i move my mouse(or press anything) everything would turn back on my download still progressing even though i went to sleep mode.

now just recently every time i press fn+f5 my laptop would go to sleep mode as usual but this time eveything turns off. which includes my mouse, my touch thing on the laptop that also serves as a mouse, the red light that use to signify that my audio is on mute, and most importantly my wi-fi shuts off.
and my download stops completely when my computer turns back on.

keep in mind its not hibernating, its still in sleep. how can i change this?

Macafee quarantined a whole list of important .exe files, froze, and now I cannot log in to windows. I tried safe mode and all other options in that list, F8 on startup, is there any way I can get in to undo what happend?

when i startup, AVG opens two icons in the lower right-hand corner. One starts scanning while the other is the control center, what does it do? All i know is that i want to stop it from scanning at every startup, but i still do a weekly scan.
