i was on limewire and it had a part where you could type in a computer ip address to connect, so if i knew someones ip address or if someone knew mine could they see what videos files and that are on my computer and if i knoew theirs could i know whats on theres

You have to make sure that you only share a folder of songs. By default many peer to peer programs put your shared songs in your "my documents" folder.Some times by mistake, users click on the wrong folders when they are picking folders to share. Well limewire is just acting as a gateway between you and the person you have the IP address of. You will only be allowed to see the files the user specifies as there shared files (through limewire). You can not just get a random IP address and expect to connect to them through limewire. You could not do anything with an IP address outside of that program unless you have an extensive knowledge in hacking..

Yes. Its considered very useful.
But they would have to really mess it up to give anyone permission to see EVERYTHING on their machine without a password.

Usually its so that you can create ONE directory that is shared, and give it a password. That way its a directory on BOTH of your machines at the same time. Great for sharing files.
