Firstly, you will need to update your anti-virus definitions and then scan your computer. If this doesn't works you will need to check what type of anti-virus product you are using. If it is AVG than do this: right click on any exe of your programs and click on
properties there you will see Type of file: Service Manager. If the type of file it shows "service manager" than this is virus you will need to change your anti virus product. Install Norton Anti virus 2007 and update its definitions than run a full system scan. Now all the viruses will be detected and then delete all the infected files and restart your laptop. and If all this doesn't work at all than its time to Format your hard disk. Insert a OS cd in cdrom and restart your pc and when boot from cd appears press ENTER and format all partitions and reload your PC. I'm sure this will work. Well, the question I would be asking is why is the virus persisting...

Two things come to mind:
Either you did not format the computer when you reinstalled windows
OR
you are not using antivirus / firewall from a RELIABLE vendor like mcafee (with it properly configured and updated) and/or are not allowing your antivirus to properly update before copying over infected files.

So if you are not using antivirus / firewall from a reliable vendor like mcafee, panda, norton, etc.. then I recommend you get a copy now.

You can attempt a web based scan from http://housecall65.trendmicro.com and see if that finds and removes everything.

Also, if the problem is spyware or adware then your antivirus may not scan for all of those and you may need a program like Spybot S&D which you can get free w/ donations from http://www.safer-networking.org

Windows CD will ask you if you want to do 1 of three options: repair, reinstall, or format and reinstall... if you have a virus the only one that will do anything is the last option to format first... this orks unless you have an extremely rare virus that infects ram or boot sectors.. then you're just a bit screwed... but this is highly unlikely.

Good Luck.

C'mon Sam. A virus is eradicated if you reformat and reload the OS. If you didn't reformat, then yeah it's possible.

But what you describe is nothing more than your associations being messed up. pdf files open with Adobe Acrobat, zip files open with winzip or another zip program.

Try opening up Adobe acrobat then load the pdf file. Go to help and support and look for the solution to your association problem.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like you don't know what you need nor how to get there.

Trojans and viruses are different things.
If you've reloaded the OS, many files won't open until you've reinstalled the program that opens them, EG. you can't open .xls files until you install MS Excel. No .pdf until you install acrobat.
If you can get to the Internet, go here http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/
and download the free version of AVG, run it to check for viruses.
If you can't get to the Internet from your laptop, use another machine to download the file.

Reboot your system into safe mode then run your antivirus program, which should remove it. Also disable system restore before you go into safe mode.
