Registry keep configuration information of windows (i.e. how windows load, what options are enable to program etc). It is written in encrypt format that only program developer/expert can understand.
When you install and uninstall lot of programs from computer, most program don't remove their registry information cleanly. (for eg norton antivirus is one ot those program that don't unistall cleanly. Other like shareware program (like 30 days limit) one also don't remove their entries. So say after 29 day you uninstall, and then install again thinking you will get 30 days more.this idea fails because registry entry is made when you install 1st time and will not give you more days (just another 1 day)
Since windows have to load registry during startup and keep the registry information in memory constantly , it slow down the computer.
Registry cleaner try to remove entries for those uninstall program and tweak some windows parameter (i.e. configuration value ) to boost performance
So only use register cleaner when you computer become unbearably slow. Don't use it as every day tool.

Because the registry is the brains of your computer. Everytime you download a program, even if you don't install the program there are registry keys associated with the program. When you remove a program, like Nortons, you are left with over 375 registry keys that requires special tools and knowledge to remove them. (As they are glued to all you files/folders and system).
Every thing that is left behind in the registry slows down your system. This is why you need to clean your registry of junk files and also defrag., your registry on a regular basis. Plus also defrag, the hard disk drive, like with "Dishkeeper Enterprise", or O&O defrag., from Germany.
I would never trust any free registry cleaner. All it takes is for the wrong keys to be cleaned and your entire system will have to be reinstalled, or if you are lucky, you can restore from the last good boot.
I use four different registry cleaners. AceUtilties, Advanced Registry Doctor, Registry First Aid and Registry Booster.
I find that like spyware program, one does not do the job.

Windows registry is basically a large database which stores all the information for proper startup, shutdown, loading programs and even to maintain computer speed. So to say it is important is an understatement at best. The registry is broken up into a hierarchical system. Think of the registry as basically a hive. At the highest level there is keys that are basically top level folders. These contains folders that are essential for Windows, Programs, and Document and Settings. Withing each folder there are values. The values contain specific information that is added and updated often.
You can edit the registry yourself, if you KNOW WHAT TO EDIT. However, a mistake can derail the system. The site below will give you an idea how to edit registry and back it up.

Other things the registry should do is remove the below problems:
# Unwanted browser objects.
# Corrupt Active X/COM Objects.
# Unused, obsolete Start Menu items.
# Software locations including missing,
# abandoned, broken or bad application/Windows paths, and links.
# Redundant Startup applications and uninstalled application schedulers.
# Orphaned shortcuts, temporary (.tmp) files and Scandisk or Checkdisk fragment (.chk) files.
# Missing or corrupt application IDs.
# Obsolete shared DLLs and folders.
# Unused help file references.
# Residual and unused files.
# Uninstalled software remnants.
# Unused and unwanted drivers.
# File extensions and associations.
# Unnecessary fonts and recent files list

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

IMHO, registry cleaners are vastly overrated and mostly unnecessary. The Windows registry is HUGE, a couple dozen extra un-needed entries won't effect preformance. YMMV.

clears all the things of the computer that you deleted like months ago, its good to have but i think you have to buy it, but if your brave enough enter the registry by going to run and typing regedit and then delete all them programs you have deleted off, when you recycle bin something it still stays there in the registry
