My Windows Media will not let me play Music or listen to or watch anything through it, most of my files and web links are going through it, is that normal? An update comes up, for wnmedia, but when I looked it up, it is not for Windows XP. Please help.

Earlier I ask this question. "I ran an security test on my computer and was told this. Your computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your knowledge nor your permission. Everyone wrote back telling me to check viruses and spyware and so on. Still turned up with nothing. I'm thinking what is happening is ICMP Pinging my computer is accepting incoming pings. is there a way for be to block or stealth. Windows Xp "updates installed" behind a NAT router. Installed firewall and AV. Test was run and GRC website. & symantec's website. both came up with the same results. Thank You everyone who's tried to help out so far. I really thank you for your time.

I got the Virusbuster/Virusburster/Virusburst computer virus about 2-3 months ago, I am just a poor high school kid, so I couldn't afford any program to remove it and the only thing I have on my computer is homework and games so I figured it wasn't crucial to remove it. But then a few days ago the little triangle icon that changes into a ball in my taskbar dissapeared and my homepage is no longer hijacked.

Now I'm not exactly sad about this, but I was wondering if it is actually possible for a virus to just go away.

I have Mcafee Internet Security Suite 8 installed on my PC and my subscription runs out soon. I like this software because it is light on system resources and does a nice job.

So I have bought it again off Ebay (legit version) so as I can get another years subscription out of it.

The problem is when I install the version I have just bought, because it is the same version I already have, it won't let me renew my subscription. It just keeps telling me that my current subscription is about to expire.

I've tried re-registering it with a different email and password but it won't have any of it.

Anybody got any idea how I can get it to work?

Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't help because it leaves my registration info on my PC when I uninstall. If I could get rid of the registration info on my PC I think that might do it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

That really chaps my hide when I'm going to visit a site and some other site pops in uninvited. I have two popup blockers; one from Yahoo and one from Google. I've had them for months. But it's only in the last month that I've been getting popups. I have Norton and Webroot spymaster. I guess they dont work either.
Can anythig stop this?

I have never given my email out to any online source, i don't know how they got it in the first place, but the spammer's address is different everytime so I can't just add them to my block list.

i must've downloaded and deleted so many frickin freeware cuz well,, hehe, i dont want to spend any money, like AVG, and spybot(except i cant use it) butif i absolutely HAVE TO, i will. it's so annoying how i go on the websites that ppl reccommend and download the software. when i finally use it, the software scans it and all, but wen it comes to the point of removing the spyware, it says i have to register or enter a license key. if i click on register or anythign else, a site pops up and tells me to buy it. it's either i dunt know how tuh' use the program or i just have to go buy it to get full protection.

I have deleted some important e-mail addresses. However, this was done months ago. I even deleted the e-mail messages themselves. Is there anyway to recover the e-mail addresses. Yes, I deleted them from my yahoo e mail address book? I guess, in some ways, I am happy if I cannot find them..but...all the same..something tells me NOTHING is deleted in the computer world. Can anyone assist? thank you

hmm...I was wondering...Now a days manufactors have made computers last longer by putting the option of sleep, stand by and hibernation, and when in hibernation, I was wondering if you could still get viruses and such without a firewall?

I am trying unsuccessfully to set my standard "Users" group to be able to Read, write and modify any file they have access to but not allow them to delete or create folders or subfolders (I am giving that right to only one person in the company to keep everything orderly).

My settings below only seemed to allow my users read-only access to files which was really bizarre. This is what I enabled for them which I thought would work (yes to the following and zero denys):

- Traverse Folder / Execute File
- List Folder / Read Data
- Read Attributes
- Read Extended Attributes
- Create Files / Write Data
- Write Attributes
- Write Extended Attributes
- Delete
- Read Permissions

What was wrong with this? Is there not a way to accomplish the setting I am looking to do?

Please be as detailed as possible with your answer... I am finding this all very confusing.

Trying to get a computer ready for resale at charitable thrift shop. Believe it has Win 98 or ME operating system but cannot get to it since it asks for password. Tried booting from floppy and CD but bios must be set up for searching Hard drive first. We just want to get it running and can't even get to a point of formatting and installing new OS. Any ideas?
