Hi there,
Some of the most recommended programs on here always seem to be AVG or Avast - although this is likely to be because they are free? Looking at current protection ratings, AVG scores a lowly 90% protection against all known viruses, whilst Avast comes in at 92%. This means they are letting through one in every ten viruses - pretty shocking.
The same goes for Spybot and Adaware. In fact if you had AVG, Spybot and Adaware installed, you would surprisingly only be protected from circa 60% of all known malware (viruses, adware, spyware, trojans, etc).
Norton and McAfee are the "best known" security products, which are currently protecting against something like 98.3% and 97% of all known viruses - a much better score. However, both of these are known for being very heavy programs which can tend to slow down certain machines. If you are thinking of installing either of these I would definitely recommend you download their free trial to check it does not affect your machine in this way prior to opening your wallet.
If you would be interested in other Security products that are better than all of these, you should try either Prevx1, Kaspersky or F-Secure who all score over a 99% protection rating. Out of these three my recommendation would be Prevx1, as this is the quickest at protecting against new outbreaks of malware.

Make sure your wireless is set up properly to prevent acess to your computer and Wi-Fi.
Most wireless routers are configured through your Internet browser. So you must connect your wireless router to a computer.
Type your router's IP address into your browser's address bar. You can find the IP address in your router's manual. You'll be prompted for a user name and password. These will also be listed in your manual.
You want to use WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access) encryption to protect your network. You'll typically see this setting as WPA-PSK (pre-shared key). You'll be prompted to enter a password of eight to 63 characters--letters, numbers and symbols. The router will use the password to build an encryption key.
WPA2 is the latest and safest version of WPA. The only weak point of WPA2 is your password. So make it as strong as possible. Here is a tip that will help.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/privacy/password.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/privacy/password_checker.mspx
Your router may use WPA, the forerunner to WPA2. If so, be sure your password has at least 21 characters.
The earliest security standard is WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy). Don't use that; it is easily broken. Check the router manufacturer's site for updates. If there aren't any, don't use the router to go online.
Now you must update your computers. Click Start>>Control Panel. Double-click Network Connections. Right-click Wireless Network Connection. Select Properties from the pop-up menu and select the Wireless Networks tab. You should see your network listed under "Preferred networks." Select it and click Properties. If it's not listed, click the Add button. In the box labeled "Network name (SSID)," enter your network's name.
Under Network Authentication, select WPA-PSK. Select AES under "Data encryption." Under "Network key," enter the same password you used for your router. You must enter it twice to confirm it. Make sure "The key is provided for me automatically" is not checked. Click OK>>OK.
Your wireless Router should have a built in Firewall. Be sure it is turned on.
AVG 7.5 is an excellent free Antivirus program. You can download it from Grisoft or at this safe download site:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/
You need AntiSpyware programs also. You should have 3 programs providing 'full time' protection. I recommend Windows Defender (free, updated through Microsoft/Windows Updates), SpyBot Search & Destroy (Tea Timer activated), SpywareBlaster (monitors and blocks incoming malware). These program can be downloaded here:
http://www.filehippo.com/
With the above your computer will be well protected.

I think that Norton Anti-Virus is the best. I have trusted them for years and never got a virus. They have been in business the longest also. Norton isn't cheep but it's worth it.

The one I have always used is Norton - it detects and fixes automatically after it tells you of course and warns you also of any malicious files, etc. that are downloading or if someone or something is trying to access your computer. you can go to www.norton.com and download a free trial and see if you like it. hope this helps
